Re: Anyone know about Hardwood flooring??

When I built my house, I used hardwood in the dining room, but travertine in the kitchen. I just like stone or ceramic where there is water. Wife likes the ease of cleaning, and we both like the look.

Now, in the next month or so we will be closing in a porch and making that a new dining room. Will use laminate flooring there because of the insulation value. Laminate will transition to the hardwood, to the travertine an to the carpet in living room. Lots of different floorings!

When i built my parents house we put hardwood threw out the entire thing except in the bathrooms and laundry room and installed tile there.if they had it to do over again they would have tiled the kitchen.one reason being 2 months go the icemaker filter in the fridge started leaking and mom didnt find it until the wood started bucking,it dont take that much water to get under the wood to make it buck.i personally would use the 3/4 inch it does hold up and makes for a more solid floor as for the transition strip no problam take a peice of the flooring and cut a verry sharp ange on a table saw ,sanded it and stain it to match.and when you do lay the floor dont forget to put felt down first.and dont forget about your vents because its a pain in the arse to go back and cut them out:love:by the way i use to install floors in a earlier life,i did george jones and wyona judds among a few others.

Re: Anyone know about Hardwood flooring??

Thanks for the comments and advice. I've decided to go with the 3/4" hardwood (Brazillion Cherry). I know the concerns about water damage are real and I thought hard about if there were to be a leak under the sink or fridge that it might damage the floor. But I think if I use caution and install all new plumbing (Which I am), my odds are good that no problems will come up. I've been here 14 years and had no leaks yet. (I know, Murphy's law 8)). I'll post some pics when it's down. Should be in a few weeks I hope...

Yep, and I built my new house and was concerned about the plumbing, so I contracted it out to a "professional." Had 6 leaks before the first month was up! :%:$:|8)
