Outside Biten XTS is used here in Florida by professionals. And believe me we know about bugs in Florida. Bifenthrin is the active ingredient. Indoors I HATE to use anything that says on the label keep away. If it will kill a roach or ant what long term is it doing to me. And here I am in a closed house with air on.

DJ is right. First get rid of the food. First thing we learn here is to keep food put away and counter tops clear. a crumb to an ant is a mountain of food. Bugs HATE counter tops wiped down with Simple Green. Borax is $4.00 at my local drug store and it is completely harmless to humans and animals. Works great on fleas also.

Just to expand the topic a little, would you guys suggest anything to control ants throughout the entire yard? Or at least within 20 or so feet around the house? During this dry time of summer around here in north Louisiana, if you take a step out in the yard you better keep moving or you'll have ants on your feet and legs because they are crawling around everywhere, even inside my boat . Got bit three times yesterday while cutting some plywood!! Does borax work for this too? Can I dump a box of it into the fertilizer spread and spread it around the yard? Hmmm...

I did get a big bag of the ant granules and spread it around the yard with the spreader like I mentioned, but that doesn't seem to be working too well...

Bait, bait, bait. Any other method will normally break up the colony and spread to other locations of your home. After you are comfortable they are gone, do an outside parameter treatment, around windows and doors. Boric acid in a craw space if you have one. Cut or trim any vegetation that may be touching eve spouts and gutters.


I owned a pest control business, and ants were my favorite. They are hard workers, but you can out smart them.

Fireman431's idea is the best. Find the ants outside first. Had them coming through the kitchen once and found a pile of them out under the garage step 50 ft from the house. Killed the ant hill and they stopped coming in the house.

Ants are attracted to water ,crumbs,dead insects....you may have a small leak in the kitchen or your frig catch pan is full of water {bottom of frig auto defrost water emptys there} Had that problem at the lake emptied the catch pan dried the floor and put out borax with sugar ...no more ants

We have what I think are ants in our kitchen.
These are really really small, the size of a this full stop (.) If there is a piece of food on the floor, sink, worktop they will come from somewhere within minutes and cover the food. (I've started itching while I'm writing this)!
We've cleaned everywhere, we have marble floors and no carpets.
We have a dog.
They seem to walk up the walls, up the fridge but only in the kitchen.
Driving me mad.

Any ideas?

The shop that I rent is owned and next door to a large cedar shingle mill. They bring in truckloads of cedar logs daily and those logs are full of carpenter ants. It had been a constant battle to keep them out of my shop and office. Everywhere I looked there were carpenter ants.

A couple of days ago while organizing some shelves I found some 'Ant Killer' that I had bought but never used. It's called Insectigone Ant Killer made by Chemfree. It's a powder containing silicon dioxide or diaomaceous earth. It's non-toxic but could be alergenic from the wheat and soy contained in it. I sprinkled it around the outside of the shop and office and now 2 days later I can't find one ant. So far I'm impressed with the results.
