If it's counter rotating when you have the shift lever in reverse the shift shoe and foot on the drive housing will be fore and aft.

if the drive is off then move the shift shoe to the fore and aft(parralel with the prop and input shafts shaft) then turn the input shaft to the left, observe propshaft.
standard rotation the prop turns to the right.

Re: anyone know how to identify counter-rotation alpha

thanks for the replies guys

yes the drive is off the boat

but as i understand it

when you shift the shift foot
fore and aft you are moving the clutch dog
to engage the gear in the front of the nose cone

which would be forward on a standard rotation
on a counter that would be reverse

there is no change of direction
of the prop shaft
the left hand prop is the change of direction

if the propshaft changed direction
you wouldn't need a left hand prop, get it?

which is why you shift into reverse to
remove a counter drive, moving the foot fore & aft

do you follow me?

on a counter drive, the gear you are
using for forward, would be the gear
for reverse on a standard
hence beefy bearings
in the carrier

i need to know if there are any outside physical
differences to tell a standard from a counter
thanks

A counter rotation drive should have an L stamped on the end of the prop shaft.
The bearing carrier in the lower unit just under the prop, is shorter than a standard rotation drive.

Just wanted to add an additional way to tell if you have reverse rotation since finding this older topic.
A counter-rotatating lower unit does not have any in & out end play on the propeller shaft. A standard rotation unit has between 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch of in & out end play.
