Anyone know how to remove this trim piece?

I am trying to remove the rub rails, I have removed the piece on the transom and removed the rivet holding the rub rail in place in the stern, now I am trying to remove the aluminum trim piece in the bow right in front of the bow light. There were 4 rivets on the bottom side that I drilled out, but the piece seems to be clamped over the rub rail channel aluminum pieces.

Any ideas?

TL, you have to VERY CAREFULLY take a big screwdriver and spread the two tabs on the bottom just a little bit. Then hook the screwdriver between the vinyl rub rail insert and the cast piece and pry it off. This was probably the most nerve racking operation in my entire restoration:eek::eek:

Go slow and be VERY careful.

And it you think that's bad, wait till you put it back on:D Will require a rubber mallet. Also, when you re-install this and the rear corner peices, make sure you hit the new rub rail inserts with a heat gun to make them plyable before you try to install the cast pieces.

Good luck!

North Beach, I was hoping it was wasn't something like that. After thinking about it for a while, I figured they weren't thinking of taking that piece off when it was built a just hammered it on. Thanks for the info about the rub rail as well. Good to know.

I have been contemplating how I am going to re-paint the gunwhales, remove the trim on both sides, sand and then paint or just try and sand / paint in place without removing them.

EZ I think I saw a picture on your 18 where you taped everything off and painted them that way. Looks like that might be easier than removing all the rivets.

It's really not that hard to do just take your time when prying it. It comes off a lot easier than you think I did pull the rubber out first I think maybe that makes it easier.

Yeah guys I got mine off and it had been there for 43 years:D I just want to make sure you move carefully. The gunwale paint looks real good if you remove the outer and inner rubrails before you paint.

And HA, my vinyl insert was and the new one is one peice all the way around the boat.

Thanks for all of the good info, I will try the pry method and see if it comes off, I want to remove my rub rails, and I assume there is a rivet holding them in place under this front piece.

I am doing this btw because I am replacing my transom.

I need to start a resto thread, I have a ton of pictures.

I didn't have to take any of that off to replace either of my transoms.....just the end caps at the stern.
