anyone know what would cause this? (see picture)

when i run my boat and then take it out of the water i have this problem...milky gear lube runs out this hole. i replaced the lower drive shaft seal but it still does the same thing. id really like to fix this problem. any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Dennis

#5 and 24?? Numbers are to small for my eyes, its a shame the whole seal kit is unavailable, try taking the part # for the kit and searching the web for it.

#5 is the drive shaft seal i just replaced...it didnt help. Thanks, Dennis

You said you replaced that #5 seal, you do mean both right, upper and lower?

i just replaced the lower one they both looked new. the motor is a 1970 but was only started for the first time in 2009. Thanks, Dennis

Need to replace them all. Isn't there a gasket too that sits on the LU? One of my Seloc manuals shows a gasket on a small hp model.

what the heck is that hole even for? seems like it just lets water in and gear lube out.... Dennis

I am guessing the hole is just a water drain hole for the leg. Did you put 2 #5 seals in and the #24?

Did you replace the lower shift rod seal? Shift rod should be snug in the seal and move firmly but smoothly with no wiggle in the seal itself.

The upper bearing (below the water pump) is a bronze bushing. Check to be sure it is not worn and there is no side play in the drive shaft. This will cause even a new seal to leak.
