Re: Anyone own a 2007 Classic SS with a 40 hp?

Just bought 1625 classic with 30hsp merc.
I have the same problem, mine won't even start to plane.
Its like pushing a giant turd through the water. I'm really disappointed also.
I'm talking to the dealership tomorrow to try and rectifie the problem.
Please let me what you fifure out.

I have a 2006 1625 Classic w/2006 30Hp Honda. My boat is a tiller though, which would make my boat harder to get on plane than a console. At least when I'm alone in it. Which is 90% of the time. My motor came with a 12 pitch prop. I was not to overly joyed with getting the boat up on plane at first either. Top end was fine. What I did, was to jack up the motor on the transom one hole and bought a 11 pitch stainless turbo hotshot prop. If I had to do it over again, I would have gone with the 10 pitch. The difference was night and day. The problem with these shorter boats is that most of the wieght is in the back of the boat (battery, gas tank, person driving (tiller model) ). Not enough length in front of the motor. In stead of spending a possible large amount of money upgrading your motor, try and raise your motor up a hole and go to a smaller pitched prop. Try a 10 pitch prop. I would wager a small bet it helps alot, and much cheaper. IMO. Good luck to ya. Junky........

Re: Anyone own a 2007 Classic SS with a 40 hp?

I know this thread is dead, but the problem stated here is so common. I don't understand why dealers are so eager to push an underpowered boat on a customer.

I got caught the same way as a newbie. In 2003, I bought a leftover 2002 16' Fisher rated for 90 HP with a 40HP 2S on the back. The dealer repeatedly assured me the performance would be fine and I could probably even pull skiers. It was a dog just as described here; seemed to take a half mile to get on plane with just two aboard. With three people, it flat wouldn't plane.

I repowered with a 90HP and have been quite happy with its performance ever since. The 90 is loafing at a 30mph cruise.

Last week I was looking at an 18' Alaskan rated for 90HP but with a 50HP 4S on the back. Very nice boat and not cheap. The dealer assured me it would fly with 50HP and do 30 or 35mph. Couldn't believe I was hearing the same old tune.

Do the manufacturers force these underpowered packages on the dealers or do the dealers order them that way to keep the sticker price down...and then can't move them? ....or is there some nefarious plot to keep everyone plowing water instead of planing? Would just like to know what's behind this.

A buddy of mine has a 1800 Alaskan tiller with a 60 e-tec on it. He is very pleased with how it performs. I too was pleased with how it worked, as a passenger. Made me look really hard at what to get. I origionally ordered an Alaskan, but decided I wanted the extra storage and casting decks without having to make them, so I went with the Explorer.

Well, Cranks, I'm pleased to hear the 60 ETEC worked well. I ended up ordering an 1800 Alaskan Side Console, but it'll wear a 90HP Merc Classic. It might fly. More importantly, it should still get up on plane when loaded with gear.

The Alaskan's biggest appeal to me was the lack of a casting deck. I fish lake Ontario mostly and there's usually waves & wakes. With the Fisher's bow pitching, the front casting deck is the last place I want to be. I like the idea of being down in the boat more under those conditions and not having to negotiate a step when moving fore & aft. Though I hear you on the storage. It will be missed.

UpstNYer That is a great set up. You will fly with that. I'm on the Larry most of the time so the deck is nice. This time of year though I do like being inside the boat and not on it. I had a hard time deciding what to get. Still want an Alaskan, but am very happy with what I have.
