carpet IS cheap, thats why it is standard flooring for boat manufacturers and the fantastic vinyl is an added OPTION, and what do you think happens to those footprints when you walk on carpet?...embedded funk.
It doesn't get hot either, unless you have sensitive little girly feet, that's what throw rugs or Crocs are for.

more vinyl wins:

I maintain a fleet of rental boats... They see a TON of un-caring use. The pontoons we run (JC Tritoons) have full carpet that can get funky, even in the course of a 1 week rental, but the funkiness is almost always limited to the area behind the console. The combination of the boarding ladder on the stern and the natural inclination of the boat to slant toward the stern while in the slip and on the trailer means that the carept aft of the console is always wet. A careful powerwashing with mild carpet cleaner takes care of the problem and overall, the carpet has aged very well considering that these boats are used 120+ days in an average season.

As our rental boats need updating/refitting, I will cut the carpet on a line across the beam right behind the console and replace it with high quality vinyl. Future pontoons will be ordered with vinyl on the rear half of the deck to help reduce the maintenance and turn-around time between rentals.

That said, it's really about your preferences. Which feels better and which fits in with the amount of maintenance time you're willing to put into the boat.

Pontoon are like the conversion vans of the boating world...who wants vinyl? While anyone could agree that vinyl is easier to maintain/clean, carpet has a place on a pontoon and/or a leisure craft. Unless yours is a dedicated fishing platform or don't like to take care of your stuff (doubtful, which is why you asked?), carpet is the best. I like the idea of carpet runner though...reminds me a grandma's and grandpa's!

P.S. as long as the carpet match the drapes...you'll be happy!

Most pontoon manufacturers are using heavy marine carpets, however they're now offering vinyl floors as an option. And they're also offering snap in carpets AND vinyl floors as a very costly option.

I've read that those that have snap in carpeting seldom even use them, as they just prefer vinyl all the time.

Since you already have the carpet, just install it and use it. Whenever it wears out, then replace it with vinyl.

The manufactuers are coming out with different colors and patterns of vinyl floors. Some look like the mahogany strip decking on old Chris Crafts, and it's some very expensive stuff. They're all available online.

Unfortunately, removing the furniture and fencing on a pontoon boat, removing the old flooring, inspecting the decking and replacing everything is a full time 1 week job. If you're doing it in your extra time, it's maybe a 4 weekend job.

I am glad you've bought the correct mastic (glue) for the job. So many people use generic mastics, only to have it not hold up in marine use. Don't forget to rent a 100 lb. floor roller to put your carpet down--to avoid the floor bubbling up. It's mandatory.

bah,
vinyl doesn't get hot, unless its the dark simulated teak, besides, most mommies have water shoes on their little snowflakes.
who wants to be outside when it's 110 anyhow?

Me. Thats the best time to be at the lake, when it is 100 degrees or hotter and you just can't wait to jump into the cool, refreshing water.
