I recently lost bearings on one of my wheels. Spidle severely scratched and hub toasted. I got all new parts, but spline must be cut off and new one welded on. Anyone have this fun experience??

It can be done BUT if your paying somebodys labor Its gonna come out close to what a compleat NEW axel will cost

In my area with saltwater there would be a lot of problems with the galvanizing needing to ground off and then it would rust up really quick after that

I second that. I have a tandem trailer that didn't have brakes on the second axle. Just adding the brake flange was going to be a pain. New 3500# axle was less than $200.

If you have a round axle, a hack saw is all you need to cut the weld and extract the old spindle. If you have a "U" shaped axle, the stub lays in the "U" and is welded along the sides. An air tool with a cut-off wheel is required to cut that weld. That tool can be rented or borrowed from a friend or neighbor that has a good supply of air tools. Spindles are dirt cheap. Any welding shop can weld the new spindle in place. Far cheaper than a new axle if you are willing to do a little "grunt work" yourself. If not, a new axle is in order.

If you go the welding route, try to find a shop that does axles for a living. If you don't and have it done in a shop without a good jig your chance of a good alignment is zilch and you will be forever replacing worn out tires.

Be sure to get the new style 'spindle-lube' style...

They let you flush grease through the bearings from back to front. Cat's pajamas for bearing maintenance.

Re: Anyone replaced spindle on axle??

I had this done to replace the stubs on an antique (1950's) trailer with modern, standard size spindles. The originals had the wheels with the integral hubs, and no spare, and the spindle was an odd size. I had an old guy do it locally who is known for welding things like drive shafts, and he got it right. It was years ago and I just replaced the tires for the first time, so I'd have to say the alignment is right on.
