Just killing somtime tonight and was lookin at different props and day dreaming. I see they make ss props for small outboards, i knew this but never payed much attation to it.

now i own a 25hp mariner, it pushes my 14 foot boat (heavy loaded) very well or so i thought. 24 ish (on a good day)mph 5400rpm 2:1 gear solas prop amita 13 pitch prop. My ther. speed should be about 33.24 72% efficient not good.

Well my first thought was to drop 2" pitch running a new amita 3blade
Then i said drop 2" pitch and run 4 blade amita more efficient
THEN this poped in my head drop 3" pitch and get SS New saturn...

Anyone have experience of experimenting with 4 blades or SS on smaller outboard? Is SS worth the extra money on smaller motors?

Also what prop would you choose in my position? (even if it isnt one i have listed)

Shooting from the hip My guess is that your motor on a heavily loaded 14ft boat
isn't likely to turn 5400 with a 13" prop Empty you might get about 32.But at that speed your motor would really be spinning according to your tach.In my mind again not likely.
Something doesn't add up probaably the tach is off or the prop isn't a 13.
Your speed seems close at 24 heavily loaded. Is it by GPS?
Can you be more specific about "heavily loaded"
As far as a ss prop there are aluminum props that are competative with ss.
Turning point makes a Rascal but I don't know if for your motor check at their site.
When changing material and probably brand you introduce more variables that are difficult to predict in a prop change.
Improvement could vary from a few tenths to several mph.
Double check your tach etc and get back with your perfornance specs.

Re: Anyone run a SS prop on 25hp motor?

My tach is a "tiny tach" that i would believe to be correct, it shows my idle at 850+-. I know there could be a varience of inaccuracy that could be expodental or a percentage. Either way i have no real way to check. The tach is said to be good to 19,000 rpm so i am not over reving the tach. I trust my tach to be correct.

My speed is based off of three different gps. One hand held garmin, the bow fishfinder gps and the console fishfinder gps, they all read right with each other.

My boat is a 1994 monark 1400sc, the boat cames with a plywood carpeted floor, rear bench carpeted wood on top, front casting deck raised 13inches from the floor again wood, side console mix of wood and carpet this was all factory. 14'6" long 65" beam.

what i added to the boat was, aluminum casting deck extension on the back and front (30lbs combinded). The 25hp mariner (120lbs), a 4hp evinrude kicker (45lbs), 6.6 gallon gas tank, three 27 group batterys 120lbs maybe? ), minnkota on the back and front (30-50lbs maybe), 18lb anchor, my tackle box 60lbs (i fish for musky so its heavy) i wieght 200. Fishing partner say another 200lbs and 50lbs gear. thats about it for major things

Last season i had the antivent plate perfect level and paralell with the bottom, i had alot of blowout in turns on plane so this season i lowered it 1 inch and it has cured 80% of that.

I bought the solas amita 13 pitch two years ago off this sight.

I am not lookin to gain any speed, just be more efficient with out losing any speed. Most the waters i fish are less than 300 acres with a few over 1000 so a couple mph isnt going to get me more time fishing.

I am hitting the water this after noon, i will get more info today and post again. Thanks

Re: Anyone run a SS prop on 25hp motor?

Ok i gathered some data today on my short fishin trip.
Idle 800-850rpm

RPM Speed MPH
1000 2.5

1500 4

2000 5.2

2500 6

3000 7

3500 10

4000 13

4500 17

5000 21

5350 WOT 24.3

The lake had a good chop and small caps <1" so speed suffered a bit due the the waves and wind.

I double checked the prop it is a 13 pitch.

Wonder what a 4blade 11 pitch would do hmmmm.
