Did you become functional in a new language? How soon? What did it cost?

Is it just me? I signed up at live mocha and right off the bat they want $14.95 to enroll. The problem I have with that is not the pittance of a price to start learning a new language. My concern is the initial price is just that, initial. I've seen it before, a nickel and a dime, a bit at a time.

There is a free trial link to the right of the 14.95 offer. Try it again.

Hmmmmm. "Free trial" doesn't tell me what the whole package costs. Smells like the "Free Credit Check"

Re: Anyone stoned by Rosetta?

I learned Spanish in high school and I'm learning German now. My girlfriend is German but we rarely speak it. Not sure why, but it's probably easier for us to speak English. Laziness I guess. Anyway, if you are interested in German, there are many free resources online like the Deutsche Welle (German Wave) website. Your local library may even have some books on learning a foreign language.

Books are good for learning the grammar rules but you can only go so far with books-you eventually need to speak the language. Some people learn better by diving right in and trying to speak immediately while others like to learn the rules first. I like to learn the rules first. But for grammar practice and listening practice, I'd recommend utilizing free resources. If it is German that you are interested in, I can give you some links.
