Does anyone use one of the 3-4' oil drain hoses that you leave attached? Are they ok? Just seems odd to have an oil hose laying in the bilge of my 19'er.

Good question. I had thought of doing that instead of sucking oil out of the dipstick. I always wonder if i am getting all the oil and sludge out. I've heard of people leaving the tube attached to the oil drain and then when it is time to drain oil, they stick the tube out of the drain hole. That sound alot easier.

Re: Anyone use an oil drain hose?

I tell ya...I just went through yet another ordeal changing the engine oil on my 350 MerC. No matter how hard I try...I can't get all the oil sucked out the tube. However, I have the perfect solution! I work for Portland's transit district...and we change the oil in our bus engines very often. Stripped out drain plug holes were fairly common until we purchased a spring loaded, brass "p e t - c o c k" (wasn't sure if that word would be posted...the edicate police ya know!) oil drain valve that permanently mounts where the drain plug used to be. As I said...the open/close lever is spring loaded...there's no way it can vibrate open.

This type valve would be perfect for draining the oil from my boat's engine. I'd simply attach a hose to the outlet nipple on the valve and run it through and out the bilge drain hole into the oil recycling bucket. Fire up the engine on the "muffs" and get it up to operating temp. Then open the drain valve lever and go have a cup of coffee or two.

Changing the filter is still somewhat of a pain...but after I loosen it, I wrap a sturdy plastic bag around it to collect the oil that spills out. If careful, I can remove it without much spillage.

If and when I find a supplier that has these valves for automotive applications...I'll let ya know. I'm sure they're out there somewhere.

Walt

ive seen those brass drain petcokcs in magazines for cars one particular is British Leyland MGB parts catalog, they list them, about $16 if I recall.

My boat has teh rubber hose with a plug in the end, and I stick it thru the drain hole and drain it outside the boat, it works GREAT.

it even has a clip on it so I can hook it up and out of the way when IM not draining oil.

I think I may have located the valve I mentioned above. It's a bit more expensive than OzJeep saw in the mag...but I know this is an excellent valve.

Wow...you mean no more sucky suction tubes down the dipstick? I'm in heaven...

Walt

Just a thought... i would place the valve at the end of the rubber hose not at the sump,Then you can clip it up higher then the sump when its closed...or always have a hose connected if its at the sump and clip it up high when not in use.It WILL fail one day and be very expensive if the oil runs out while your under way.I guess thats why they use a plug...fool proof!!

russmuss,

thats exactyly how mine is set up, the ritting with the brass plug is in the end of the hose, and its clamped up well above the oil pan, IM pretty sure it could be run with NO plug in it and probably not loose a drop of oil.

it makes oil changes a BREEZE, and no mess, just put teh hose thru the drain hole, and into a milk jug or whatever you recycle your oil in.
