Just curious if any of you have been into CB radios.

I use to be into them quite heavily in the past with my Grandad.
I since then learned to repair them, and still do from time to time. I often get junkers from yard sales and turn them around on EBay.

As my name suggests, I use to go by Homer on the local channels, and shoot skip on 38 LSB and on the high band (USB)

H.

Yeah I still use a CB when I take road trips or am just on some back roads to get info.

Nothing beats a CB for warnings about condtions ahead whether it be
accident
weather
or construction

you can always get good advice on alternate routes etc.

everyone should have a CB. cancel that every "mature" person should.

Pikey

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

Well Homerr, I still have a set of Raker Beams up, but don't fire up the unit much anymore cause the neighbors get kinda upset when I go to hollering for Red Rider in New Mexico. :D

You know what I am saying. ;)
Back a few years, me and a bud, "German Shepard" would get on there and have all the neighbors calling.

He lived about 2 mile from me back on top of a hill and man when he turned the 5K on, you knew it.
He died a few years back so I don't get on it as much as I use to.
I do use one in my truck and one in the motorhome though.

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

I have a highly tweaked General Grant SSB and a ummmm ahhhh ....

modulation enhancer ... yeah yeah thats it! modulation enhancer!

the thing is, I want to install it in the S-10, without causing injury to the lil guy.

I think a k-40 would take the gaff of a 400 watt heater, and the truck comes standard with a 100 amp alternator, just dont know where to mount it, I guess a bumper hitch whip would be a good way to go

I had a moonraker too, now and then I would talk to arizona and california, but only now and then ...

skipland! skipland! this is the one, the only Jersey Rebel comin at ya!

:D :D :D :D

I use to drive tracters(wide loads) for my father and used them. Once every few years I install mine till the locals burn me out. But its a must for a road trip. Saves you lot of time not to mention the detour route reguired to avoid hold ups.

Ahhh yes.....

The Moonrakers, Grants, the Cobra 2000...
All very nice stuff.

The last beam I had was a homemade Moonraker 4.
Building professional antennas for a living certainly helped this project!
It's amazing what you can reach with a beam.

I sold off most of my equipment, but I keep the good old boys around: Cobra 148GTL, Grant XL, and my Granddad's President Zachary.
A few items I have left, EBay won't let me sell  (you proly know what)..Even though they are legal.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Nice to know there are a few of us CB jockeys still around.

H.

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

Around me here on LI, the CB airways are so congested with little children, that they are 99% useless!

The mods in this board would have a field day on the CB radio with these fouled-mouth children, that just talk about nothing for 2 hours.

Seriously, one kid keys the mike and ends up talking about nothing for 2 hours without releasing the mike button even once!

And because one kid is talking so much on one channel, the others go to another channel and do the same, so there is not one clear channel to get onto!

I don't know if they are on the side-bands or skip-land anywhere, but here, CB's are useless.

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

here CB's are pretty much useless as well, people running 2000+ watts of power to talk to their neighbor! I got out of them as tubes (remember those) were starting to die off. the transistors just don't have the same sound. I talked all over the world on them traded QSL cards so that I could confirm where I had talked. As far as law, the only thing they will do is if you are killing someone with you CB they will arrest you. Two guys I know (2000+ watts) living 2 blocks apart were stopping and starting some guy's pace maker. Those box's are still in my closet (so they don't kill him) I have worked on my share in the past, I have a few in the closet and they'll stay there tell I have a yard sale!
Richard

I still have a couple laying around. I used to use them alot fishing on northern lakes. There wasn't much chatter to worry about.

I never could understand the airplane paint burners. I once had a CB conversation come through my car speakers with the radio--OFF!!!

I figurred out is was the eighteen wheeler next to me. It scared the bejeebers out of me!

Hey Ray, be careful with all that "enhanced" power around your new truck. Most vehicles wiring is shielded these days, but if you poof a component, it could be di$asterou$ for your truck.

Moved here due to technical content. I'm afraid it will take a little getting used to the difference in these threads and their intended topics.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

Yea, I have (2) LTD 29's and a 25 LTD w/some toys, etc. but with the Youths playing in this area, and some folks going overboard with the power, I backed out, a long time ago. The wife, also hated the CB traffic noise, when on the road, so I finally gave up, when traveling friends and I got cell phones. Still have one mounted in my truck, and have enough to put in all my other vehicles, if need be.

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

point well taken djohns, hmmmm, Ill save the heater for the Tow Beast

it steps down too, 50, 100, 200, and of course 400

dont those high tension lines throw off more of an EMF than an antenna?

especially if I run a rear whip ... eh, the Grant is tweaked up a bit, does well, especially on that SSB mode

I wonder if they would work on a VHF radio, especially if you went wandering off shore

what is the range on a standard VHF marine radio?

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

I think CB's are a thing of the past. I've never been in a car or truck in my life that had a CB in it.
I just know what they are from watching that sweet 1977 Trans AM in the movie "Smokey and the Bandet" :D

Re: Anyone use CB radio?

When I was over the road for 22 years, always had a 110" whip on the truck.

Had a Cobra 29LTD, with a 500 kicker under the bed for the "Long Distance" bear reports. :D

And when you hit the Majave, you could set sail, but just at night.
Always to hot to cross in summer in day time.
I always loved that ol saying, "the farther, the faster" :D

That held so true for the 1693 Cat with the 16 on air.
Wohooooo!!!
