I have a small spot on the oil pan that is rusting out and has a small leak. i am pulling the motor tomorrow to put a ring gear on it and cannot afford a new pan right now and would like to get the motor back in same day. my question is, anyone recomend putting some jb weld on the trouble spot? i am going to get a new pan this winter and pull it then and do that, i would just like to get through the rest of the summer.

Is it in a spot where you could possibly drill out the bad spot & put a nut, bolt & gasket on it?
Jb might work if you could prep enough, but I would not count on it to hold......IMHO....:)

There is some stuff, cant remember the name of it but, it comes in a tube and you just cut a little off and kned it in your hand for a bit and then stick it on. This works great as long as the surface is clean of paint. Ive even used it to temp patch a hole it oil was coming out of with out cleaning it. but it not a good idea to do it that way. Anyway get the paint off it it and it will stick really good. I get it at the local napa or auto zone.

You could always go with the old stand-by and braze it with a coat hanger. Just a thought.

I used JB weld on my block and my exhaust manifolds without any problem. The main thing whatever you use is get it clean and oilfree and like you said, jut a temporary fix. You may just be better off going to a junk yard and pulling a pan off and using that. save you from pulling the engine again

If you can't afford to fix it right the first time how are you going to afford to put gas in it to use it after you bubble gum it together?

I have used it on an oil pan before. Sanded the area then cleaned it real good with brake cleaner.Put the JB Weld on and it held for several years before i sold the boat.

$266 :eek::eek::eek:

If you have the time (tomorrow, probably not) get one off Ebay. Your local hotrod/performance shop might have one too. Heck, call up a couple engine rebuilders in your area and see if they have one.

What the heck is with the junk yards punching the oil pans, don't tell me it's easier than removing the plug :rolleyes::mad:

JB weld should work, I'd scuff (and then clean) the heck out of the metal so it has something to hang onto and let it dry very slowly. JB takes about 4 hours to setup and 24 hours to cure. You can speed it up by heating or setting in the sun, but I think this affects the bond. I've had it get rock solid in 15 minutes,,, but I didn't trust the bond. Heck, I used it on my trucks gas tank when I was a kid. Mixed up a batch, put it on a few layers of packing tape and slapped that to the tank, held up for years,, or until I wrecked the truck...

To answer your question it will work for a little bit. My brother did it on his F350 pan and it got him 4 months. Just make sure its clean.

I would think that if you have one small hole, many more are not far behind.

I did a quick check and you can get pans for around $200. Seems like cheap insurance to me, but then again that's me. ;)

Re: anyone used JB weld?

I have used an epoxy gas tank repair kit from NAPA to repair a oil pan. Sanded down to bare metal and used the fiberglass cloth in the kit. Worked well. I love JB, but think the patch kit might work better.
