Anyone want to take a stab at a Windows 98 SE 'puter Problem?

Hi,

It's a five year old machine that's run 7 days a week in a business application.

Last week...it started rebooting repeatedly...would no sooner get up and running...when it would re-boot. No error message or anything. Upon re-boot it would run ScanDisk each time...because "Windows did not shut down properly".....ScanDisk found no errors.

It runs OK in Safe Mode...or in DOS...no re-booting then.

So far; I've F-Disked and RE-Formatted the drive and re-installed Windows. No change.

Any suggestions?

Have you changed anything, added any new hardware or software?

Tell us more about your system. If you reformated and reinstalled the issue is most likely hardware related. My guess would center around heat issues.

What are your temps like? Could it be overheating? Check your CPU, Northbridge, and PSU fans....make sure they are working.

I had an old PC that would shut down and reboot every now and then, the problem was a lose conection on the power supply.

I concur with RPJS it sounds like a power supply failing. I have had to replace a few over the years.

Yeah, that's the first clue of a failing power supply.

No; no new software or hardware. All fans are running.

Do you think it could be the Video card? Actually it doesn't have a true video "card"...the video is integrated on the motherboard. I'm thinking that the video card doesn't kick in completely in Safe Mode or Dos...

I wonder how I can test for the Power Supply failure?

Power supplies are hard to test without the proper equipment. When I get symptoms like that I just spend the 30 bucks on a new one and be done with it.

Yea - A power supply tester cost's as much a a new power supply. Check all the power supply connections one more time, then buy a new supply.

I would lift it up 3 feet off the table, slide a new one underneath it, then discard the one on top.d
