hey again,

I have to flush out overfilled oil (and winter water) out of my engine (165 3.7 224)...I do plan on being on the water with 30W oil ..but I just need to get this stuff flushed out..up to temp..drained and filled again with new oil at the proper level. I have 5 gallons of rotella sitting around...I can't use it elsewhere..anything wrong with using it as my go-between oil for a week or two ?

that will work perfectly.. interestingly your ? about changing engine oil to flush out winter freeze condensation that has to get in.. if your in a climate that freezes, thaws,, over and over.... I too experienced that.. I changed my engine oil last fall, checked this past weekend after 3 outings on the water.. pulled dipstick, oil was dirty from use, thought.. does that feel like there's a little water in there?? I drained it, it looked ok, perhaps a very tiny bit in there from condensation.. I've got a 1987 3.0.. I know most mercruisers call for 20-40ish... or SAE 30. my oil fill plug on the engine (it is original) says SAE 10-30.. I hemmed and hawed about it.. spent a few more bucks per quart and got Quicksilver 4 stroke 10-30... I dont expect any issues, but your comment about winter condensation getting into engine oil was interesting. There are other ways a little bit of water can get into an engine, other than cracked block or manifold from freeze.... I recall in April when I first opened up the doghouse and looked at the engine, it was litterally dripping wet from condensation....zero water in the bilge hole, plug was out............freeze=ice./thaw=water too

I actually posted another one about why it was like that... the guy I got the boat from forgot to take the plug out the bottom... engine sat in water...and consequently ice..up to the top of the alt rotor. So I can definitely see how water got in the crankcase. I spent a few weeks going back through the cooling system and all elec connections and it started up no problem. no leaks. However, what I didn't realize is that there was probably enough water down there to create an overfill situation... became milk sludge and poured out the vent tube. so I am going to go home to desludge and start over
