I am repainting my outboard, Evinrude 1996 48spcl, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with tempo paints. There are minimal instructions on application. I got the zinc chromate primer and white paint. From what I understand, you are not supposed to let the primer dry before overcoating with the color. Do you light sand between coats of color, and also between coats of clear coat? any input would be great!

Re: applying tempo paint

I repainted my 81 Johnson with the green zinc chromate then the Tempo white.
I did just use a very light coat of the primer.
If i remember right i let the primer dry over night then painted the next day.
I ended up going with about 3 coats of the white. If you watch it while you are spraying you can get a good gloss but need to shoot it thick, almost to the point of getting runs.
Too thin and it has very little gloss when it dries.

What is the best way to remove the paint from LU. I am using paint stripper and a scraper for the cowling, and its not coming off as easily as I thought. I was thinking sand blasting would be the way to go...

Just sand it off..... actually you do not have to remove the old paint but, you must use zinc chromate where you expose bare aluminum. as long as you scuff up the old finish the new paint will adhere.

thanks for the advice. Not removing the paint will be a whole lot easier.

Re: applying tempo paint

Use a de-wax chemical first..... sand and if there are any chips be sure to sand them smooth...... as I mentioned before ....IF you sand to bare metal the zinc chromate needs just a mist coating. You should consider a coat of primer before the tempo paint.
