I aquired a 1983 Bayliner Capri Bowrider as part of an estate sale. It is in great condition, as it has been in dry storage since it was new, but hasn't been started in 3 years. I have cleaned out the carb, put in fresh feul, and a new impeller. It will start fine and runs smooth, but seems to lack rpms, speed and power. At full thottle it reaches 2800rpms and 28 mph. What should the performance of this boat be? Specs are as follows:
Volvo Penta I/O AQ125a w/solex downdraft crab.
17 degree prop

you need to due a compleat tuneup with NEW points ,cap, rotar, fuel filters ect and set everything to the correct specs

the carb is a simple one and may be gunked up from sitting

the ignition parts just dont store well and it doesent take much to hurt the performance

at 3 years old the fuel is a real MAYBE also you may do much better if you use it up and get fresh fuel

tommays

I have ordered the parts for a complete tune-up. What type of top speed and rpms should I expect if everything is functioning correctly?

Yes let us know how you came out with your tune up and if it helped... i have an 1985 of the same boat, same motor, with the same problems.... with one other person in the boat i'm at about 3100 rpms and reaching speeds between 28 and 30. Any more people than that and it takes 40 acres to get up on a plane. and when it does, it wont go over 25 mph :) "Smart Tabs on order."

I agree that a good and thorough tune is in order.

Another problem that can cause reduced power is a slipped timing belt - not unheard of in these beasts.

Aldo

I have the same problem with the same boat (I purchased from a friend that had it stored for 3 years). I put in new points, condensor, plugs, ignition wires and it ran better. I finally broke down and paid the $75 for a new distributor cap and advanced the timing a couple of degrees. Then I was able to reach 33mph at 3500rpm.

You might want to consider a Pertronix elec ign module instead of going with points/condenser. I did that several years ago and it was a good move. I can go 33mph on gps with two adults, gear, and about half tank gas with mine at WOT about 4500 RPM, may get a few more mph if its just me in the boat.
