Where would you turn for parts? I've found a few sources through Google, but I want to hear personal references...

Does anyone know if the AQ120 has a equivalent in a car motor? Currently looking at boatsolutions for a head gasket kit, I still need to find the bottom end peices...

I'm hoping to get my boat putting along by the 4th, my b-day is the 13th.

But even if I get it going, I'll be collecting stuff for a motor rebuild over the winter. The drive was rebuilt not that long ago.

Re: AQ120 rebuild recommendations-

Welcome to iboats, we have the same birthday July 13. if memory serves its the same block as my engine, a B21. So pretty much any 2.1 litre volvo 240 series car engine will work for a block not 100% on the years but i belive is a 1974-1992 or there abouts volvo, just transfer all the marine stuff to new block. These engines can be had pretty cheap from what i understand.

Also is this the 120a or 120b

The 120a is a B18 block. 120b is the B21

:)

Re: AQ120 rebuild recommendations-

I don't know how to tell if it's a A or B. I just saw the sticker on top that says AQ120... It's a '81 Glassmate that my dad bought long ago. I know it's not beyond saving ;)

I hadn't thought of getting a donor motor from a car. Thats a pretty good idea. I was more thinking along the lines of just buying a rebuild kit made for the car versus the boat, and avoid paying the "it's a toy so we charge more" tax that boats and motorcycles seem to have....

The only thing I'm questioning right now is the condition of the valves. I'm getting a backfire when I crank it. Cam timing is dead on, the distributor timing is as close to perfect as I can get it without getting the motor idling... I'm thinking maybe one was partially open when it was parked, and it rusted, and isn't seating... tomorow, I'll compression test it..

Oh, and I have to figure out how to get rid of 30-40 gallons of bad fuel from the tank....And replace the sending unit...

I siphoned my fuel out, very easy. Do a compression test and see what that tells you. Rebuidling these engine is not so easy. For example if you replace the main bearings, the manual says that you need to line bore it? Don't know. But if your engine is that shot that it needs a rebuild I would either find a donor motor or get a shop to do it for you. Most of the Volvo engines if not all of them are marinized automotive engines.

Have a great day

It should tell you right around the bell housing area what model and pn and serial number the engine is mines on the port side. Im not 100% on mounts between the b18 and b21. Differences id imagine are the bore size cams, heads and what not. Got to volvopentastore.com and you can check the difference between the 120a/b but if your gonna get a new motor; shoot just get a volvo b21 motor out of a car there's a lot of them and there pretty tough little 4 bangers i've noticed.

As far as the rebuild kits there is a difference in some of the gaskets, the head gasket is stainless steel. Which shouldnt be too much of an issue if your engine runs on antifreeze vs raw water.

Thats why these engines are good for the sound, salt water doesnt get into the motor unless u have issuses

Siphoning the fuel is easy, but how do I dispose of it is the question? I'll be compression checking the boat in a few minutes. I had a bad allergic reaction to something last night, and barely slept, then just woke up a few minutes ago.. I hate sleeping in...

My plans for rebuilding the motor include complete machine work, I never rebuild a motor without it. Motor hopefully isn't that bad, but if it does run, I'll rebuild it over the winter, so I've got a fresh motor for the summer to come. I'll be out on the thing every other day ;)

Yeah, mine is cooled with a closed system, so I'm not as scared of using non-marine stuff in it. And I don't foresee it ever hitting salt water anyway...

I'll try and find out if it's a A/B....

Its definitly a 120b. The 120a was used in the late 60s and is raw water cooled.

Good luck with the boat.

Keep us posted on your progress.:)

I looked, it's a 120B, as you say ;)

I've got a line on a B21 from a car...

I didn't get to compression test the boat yet today, but I'm going to go do it. Real life interfered with playing with the boat....
