first time boat owner. is it ok to remove the prop. put the drive in a deep and large tub of water and run the engine .
how long can this be done, is it bad for the unit?
I want to rev up the rpm to max to be sure it runs at idle and high rpm. thanks

Ayuh,... Rev'ing a motor to it's Max rpms without a load on it, leads to Blown motors, 'n is of No diagnositic value....

You can run it forever in the tub, it won't hurt anything. But, you running at high rpm in the tub with no load is a total waste of time. You could pull 2 spark plugs out and still run it well over 5,000 rpm.
If you left the prop on and tried it, if you found a way to keep the water from blowing out of the tub, the prop would cavitate like crazy, and the water would be so aireated around the drive, the engine would overheat.

I put my drive in a tub of water from time to time to give me a chance to fine tune everything, but i would never put it in gear. best to just take it out to the lake an take notes of max rpms at full throttle, and anything else that may be of consern. then you will be more accurate of any adjustments needed..
