I've read a ton of post on these heating up so I have been able to troubleshoot this. Now I need advice on fixing the problem. It's heating up in the driveway with bucket or muffs. It's sucking air below the intake on the outdrive - not where the hose connects or where the gasket is but in the little gap below those. Questions are:

What is the problem?
Will that be under water when it's in the water? - so it won't matter
Can I pack it with grease or something to stop the leak?
Can I take the intake neck off and fix seal it from inside there with something?

I'm looking for answers that don't involve me taking the entire outdrive apart.

If I do have to take it apart can you give me some detailed instructions?

Thanks

Had the same issue. There is a bushing that holds the shaft in the center section at the top and bottom. Ours was just about worn out to non existant. You need to press it apart with it off the boat. You can pull the upper off and the water elbow off to see the bushing and if the tube is making contact with the elbow. When you get it apart it will all make sense. It's a labor intensive job, hope yer handy.

Also, Google Volvo penta 270 outdrive shop manual and download it. A must have!

OK, I decided I didn't really want to tackle this so I took it to the shop. I tell the guy what it needs and he tells me that you have to replace the $600 stainless pipe when you replace the bushing because the pipe has to come out to replace the bushing and you can't get it out without damaging it. This sounds crazy to me and I haven't heard of anyone else having to do this. I'm not going to do it because he said with the labor and gaskets etc. I would be looking at $2000. Should I run from this guy or is he just trying to do it right. I really just wanted to get about a year more out of this boat then buy a new one. I've done tons of work to it and it's running great but it doesn't make much sense to put that much more into it.

I'd run, with the right fixture the tube will press right out with no damage.

My tube came out without issue when I replaced my bushings. Salt water boat might be a different story...
Labor intensive, but very doable for a DIYer.

Thanks guys. That's what I was thinking. I'll probably still take it somewhere because I've been working on it all year and I'm short on time right now but I'll look for someone that's not going to try and fix it with a hammer.

For less than what they are trying to charge, you can go to harbor freight and get your own press, order the special press tool from volvo and do it yourself! Take it as far apart as you can and bring it to a machine shop with the parts. I bet its cheap as can be as they usually bill by the hour. That will take a skilled guy 30min! Press tube out, insert bushings, press back together. Done. Good Luck!
