Replacing the timing belt on my AQ125 while I have the motor out. The marks on the belt are throwing me for a loop! With the cam lined up (Dot at 12 o'clock lined up with the mark on the valve cover) with the belt stripe. Intermediate lined up (marks lined up @ 3 o'clock) belt stripe lines up. Crank lined up I think, the marks are difficullt to see but the double stripes on the belt that i gather should be lined up to something on the crank Keyway? are about 5-6 teeth past the crank pully towards the tensioner? Is this right ? belt seems to be the correct length but the stripes not lining up has me a little concerned.

Thanks in advance for any insight,

Neil

Ive done many belts on cars but am have never seen this marks on the belt procedure before.

Line up the tick marks in the crankshaft belt guides to the mark on the timing cover. Then put the belt on the crankshaft and get the double line lined up with those marks. Hold the belt in the cogs and don't let it slip. Now put the other belts on the cam and intermediate shaft so the lines are in alignment with the dots on the wheels.
Release the tensioner. Then turn the engine a few turns to make sure nothing slips.
Don't try to get the marks on the belt to line up again, it won't happen.

So dont really look to line up the pulleys to anything else, just go by the belt. Seems a little different but it is a boat, all the cars ive done you allwas line you the pulleys to marks first. I'll give that a shot, just wana make sure that i get it right. I would hate to have to tear it all down again after the motor is back in the hull.

Thanks for the input Don.

I didn't say you didn't line up the pulleys first. Everything should line up at the same time, you just need to start with the crankshaft, not end with it.
