aq125a - Is Coolant Temp Sensor wrong?

I put a meat thermometer in the coolant tank and it reads 175-180, but the gauge on the dash says 240-260.

I connected an ohm meter to the sensor and it read 250 ohms at cold and 75 once it was warmed up.

By the way it has a brand new OEM Thermostat and new impeller. The raw water pump is circulating water all the way through the system and appears to be working properly.

1. Is it possible for the temperature in the expansion tank to be this much lower? Or is the sensor bad?

Thank you!!

I would check all points with an infared digital thermometer. It is the only way you can be sure. You can check the expansion tank, the heat exchanger, the thermostat housing, the inlet hose the outlet hose, the bypass hose. This tool will leave no doubt.

If it was actually that hot, I would think you coolant would boil over. To me it sounds like there is a problem with either the sensor or the gauge.

Have a great day,
