Haha! Love it! I was using a spark plug socket too! :pound:
almost too backyard
That's a nice way of saying it.

Yeah, when it didn't budge at all with a couple good wacks, I stopped. I have access to a press and would shoot myself if i ruined the steering knuckle ($500 to replace). I even ordered up the volvo drift to punch it out without messing it up, and to help set the seals and bearing during install. It was only $13, but it's coming with all the parts from the penta store. Total of about $100 for seals and one bearing.

So to get the intermediate housing off, the book is a little vague. If I'm reading this correctly, the big flathead 'lockscrews' need to be taken off and then that should expose the pivot pins. The pivot pins are then punched out (from the inside to the outside). Sound right?

Once the locking screws are out, drive the pins in toward the center. If the steering helmet is in the way, turn it one way or the other. Again, don't mushroom the pin. the pins can then be tapped in from the outside again, using the slot to rotate the pin so the locking bolt lines up.

Really, thanks. I was going to make that more difficult than it needed to be.

I used an impact driver socket as a punch on the water tube, going out and going back in. Add one hillbilly to the group.

I didn't realize the correct tool was only $13. That would have been convenient.

Impact driver socket is a great idea! I was worried of the spark plug socket flaring out the tube, but a 21mm socket made good contact all around the tube while clearing the housing.

I got it off and taken apart yesterday. I felt silly when I finally realized that it was just a notch in the end of the pivot pins that I was attempting to unscrew. I finally got out the torch and then hit it with the impact screwdriver hard enough that the pin moved a little. When I saw there was no threads and finally figured out what I was looking at, I grabbed a punch and knocked them out. I now realize that the notch is there just to help line up the set screw notch.

Here is all that was left of the upper bushing:

And this is all that was left of the twin seals and needle bearing:

I think I'm looking at the left-overs of the blown our bearing:

I'm not sure yet how to get the remains of the bearing out. The lip of the race is above it so I can't just push it through, and the lip is the same size so a drift that clears it will clear the bearing too, so I can't push it down either. Cutting it out will surely damage the race too. Although, it's sitting in there a little cocked now, so the race may already be damaged.

The remains of the bearing there IS the race. It won't affect anything if you cut a little too far or gouge underneath it a little bit. When you install the new bearing it will cover any minor damage that you do.

The race is out. I just cut it out, it was softer than I expected. I scratched the housing a little but don't think it's anything. Just waiting on parts to put this back together...

I got it all back together! Well except for getting the lock bolts into the pivot pins. I cant turn the pins at all to line up for the lock bolts. I'm thinking I might have to drive them back out to start over.

I'm just waiting for the drive oil to settle right now, so I can top it off and go for a test ride.

Sounds good. To bad the lakes are still frozen over. A couple more days...

Still frozen! That sucks, but it was really nice here today. I got on the water for about an hour and it ran great, overheating is fixed!

I didn't install he water pump kit, so that's not the problem and can go back.

While I had the drive off I replaced the rear seal on the flywheel housing. It took some hillbilly engineering to pull it, seal pullers wouldn't fit, slide hammer jaws were too big, so check this out :)

A wire coat hanger and a couple of screws, hit it twice and the seal was out. The bearing looked good so I just put in a new seal using a PVC pipe to help seat it.

Thanks for all the help and tips with this in guys!

Using the screws i can understand, done that to a few seals, but the coat hanger? That's just wrong. Did you have to remove an item of clothing from the hanger? Nice work with the pvc, btw.

any day now the lakes are going to soften and we can go boating again...
