as some of you know i have just bought an 18ft V163 1971 glastron
she has an AQ130A and 250 sterndrive
well i took her out for the first time today and boy did it vibrate tremendously (that bad that if i was a woman i would have enjoyed it) then when i moored up at the jetty i could hear water flowing in the transom on inspection it looked like it was coming from the bell housing side of the engine started her up and the water stopped switched engine off and it started again

question 1:what would cause this

are there also meant to be engine mounts as the engine seems to be held on just by the leg and transom so basically have i just answered my own question about the vibrating boat, its more the water thats concerning
thanks in advance guys(and gulls)

Sounds like water in the ujoint bellows. Time to pull the upper gear box off the outdrive to check the ujoints. You also have water in the bearings inside the engines bellhousing. Those bearing also need replaced and are probably part of the vibration.

Re: AQ130A on glastron

so does that mean an engine removal or just a leg removal
anyone know about engine mounts????? obviously there are fittings on the engine but it dont look like there has ever been any fittings on the floor it basically looks like the engine is balanced in the air a foot above the floor

Re: AQ130A on glastron

Hi Graham,

you have this two problems, right?

1. heavy vibrations when engine runs.
2. Water runs into the bilge, only when engine runs or always?

Do not wonder about the engine mounts, that is normal. The engine does not need extra mounts below, it is just hanging at the transom.

Regards,
Lars

hi lars thanks for coming on
water only comes in when engine is off when i start it the water disappears but its coming from the back of the engine i would say the bell houising

the vibrations are really bad that if i had a glass of milk it would turn to cheese

I do not know the 250 drive exactly. You have to take the drive off to see locate the problem. Could be that the sealing rings on the bell housing are in a bad state. Just wondering why water only comes when engine is off...

To the vibrations: check the ignition and the valves. Furthermore the bearing in the bell housing could be broken down.
Valves and ignition you can do while the engine is still in the boat, for the bearing you have to remove the engine. But thats not a big problem: you have to remove the drive. After that you can loosen the 6 screws that hold the bell housing on the transom. You need small crane to single the engine out then.

Re: AQ130A on glastron

The 250 drive is identical to a 270 EXCEPT, the gears are straight cut, not helical.
You can remove only the upper gear box to remove the bellows or even remove the engine, NO reason to remove the complete outdrive.
From your drawing, you DO have water running thru 2 bearings, if they have gone bad and locked up, they could have spun inside the engine bellhousing and that will really cause a bad vibration. Have seen it on many Volvos.

As I said, I do not know the 250er exactly.
Do what Don says and take your camera with you.

EDIT: Ok Don, the same (remove upper gear box) would be possible at the 280er to remove the engine....

A lot better pictures of the drives and engines right here at iboats.
Right at the top of the page under Volvo Parts. Straight from Volvo. http://www.volvopentastore.com/

No, of course not all.:)
Wait for Don, I don't know exactly, I have never done this before. I have removed always the complete drive.

Re: AQ130A on glastron

The glastron i had the engine just hung out there in mid air too. I thought the front mount was missing but nope, it doesnt have one. Can't help you with the leak. But the drive comes off the back of the boat and the engine can come out inside the boat, seperatly.

Re: AQ130A on glastron

Here is how you get the upper gear box off. After everything is loose, just lift the gear box up and back. You will have to push the coupling (between the upper and intermediate section down so you can turn the box sideways)
Then just pull it back.
