Hi All,

1. I am changing the seals on the cooling copper pipes on my AQ130c and I was wondering if these seals are just fitted with pressure or need to be sealed themselves somehow.

2. On the same engine I am changing the seal on the Raw Water pump due to a drip coming from the one of the two weep holes. But looking at the pump from the rear the order of parts was:

O-ring
Seal
Seal (reversed)

But on an exploded view online of the pump http://www.volvopentastore.com/mall/image/vendor/699/EPC/bigger/5932_big.png

the order of parts is different:

Clip
Bearing
Bearing
then
Seal
O-ring
Seal (reversed)

Plus there is a screw that goes into one of the weep holes, should that be there?

Thanks for your help

Pete

Re: AQ130c Changing Cooling & Water Pump Seals

Well, I'm no expert on this, alhough I had a drip leak from the top copper
connection at the tank. Just a rubber gasket that fits inside the plastic
fitting with no "compression" type of fitting to seal it. I lightly sanded the
copper end, applied some permatex gasket sealant around all surfaces,
and put it back together. Takes some real good dexterity in the arms to
put the bolts back into the rear seal of the copper pipe. Let the permatex
dry for a day or 2 before adding coolant. Make sure the o ring inside the
plastic housing is not worn. Use permatex there, also.

The copper pipe had some tarnish on it that would permit some coolant to
leak through the seal. Sorry I can't offer any definite advice. Can't offer
anything on the raw water, but another thread is going on that.

Permatex, works wonders.

Good luck!

Agreed on the Permatex.:)

I've never fix one of those pumps, but I guess I'd go with the order on the parts diagram.

on the raw water pump which end goes up...it fits both ways...but does the hose inlets go towards the top or towards the bottom...or does it even matter? the reason i'm asking is cause i have one and it's on a aq130c and it's installed which looks upside down so the water inlets are near the bottom of the engine...but when you look at the front plate on the raw water pump the writing is upside down. if you put the water fittings towards the top then it looks like it's in the correct position but what confuses me is there is a little screw on the very top of the raw water pump...is this a drain screw...so i guess my question is which way do i install this raw water pump?

The inlet and outlet are on the bottom, its the only way the outlet tube will seal also. I cleaned and painted all seal surfaces and applied parker o-ring lube to the seals and haven't had a leak in three years. The O-ring is still a mystery to me I put it between the opposing seals

maybe you can answer this question...i put my 270 stern drive in a bucket of water but the impeller won't pull the water up to circulate through the motor...is this because the impeller doesn't create enough suction to pull the water up? its a new impeller and i checked for leaks. when i hook a hose directly up it circulates and comes out of the exhaust. just not when i put the drive in the bucket it doesn't circulate. any ideas?

My bad. I thought I was replying to the OP.

You should start your own thread.

You are correct, the Penta water pumps will not lift water far enough. Stop trying or you'll risk damage to the pumps.

When the boat is in the water, the static water level is roughly equal to the pump, so no problem, on plane, water is forced into the inlet on the front of your lower housing.

Note that there are some problem areas on these drives. Examine the elbow where the raw water hose connects just under the u-joint bellows, they like to corrode and let air in. Works fine sitting still, as it's underwater, it leaks air on plane. Under that elbow is a gasket with a raised rib, that raised rib goes down to seal on the top of the pivot tube.

I've recently taken on a 24' twin VP AQ130/270D project. I'm all too familiar with these drives.

Let me know if I can help...

Thanks for the info...i figured thats what it was cause i took the hose off the water pump and created a suction and it held so i figured the raw water pump impeller wasn't strong enough to pull the water up especially when the boat is on the trailer and higher up...but works fine with no heating issues with a hose hooked up to it...guess i will see when i take it to the lake. thanks everyone for the info.

Re: AQ130c Changing Cooling & Water Pump Seals

ok seen your post about the raw water pump...it's exactly like the diagram...looking from behind on mine it's c clip, then bearing, then another bearing then oil seal, then o ring, then reversed o ring and yes the screw should be in there that is what contacts on the motor to make it spin not really a screw...i will post a pic if you want let me know. hope this helps...thats exactly how mine is...now i need a new impeller burnt mine out today and got the motor at 200 degree's.

hello Pete,
I was wondering if you figured out how the set up was in the raw water pump, I have the exact motor as yours and I found water in my oil and a busted seal on my water pump, I don't even think my pump was built right, all I can see is 1 flat seal, there is no bearings, clip, or o rings

The screw you refer to holds the internal cam in place that the impeller acts against to pump water.
