Success!!!

I cut grooves in the oak board which created more surface to grab the shaft.

I got out the 3 lbs hammer like PP40 said. I don't have the correct socket so I used my trusty 30mm open end wrench. Who'da thought I'd ever use that wrench? I'll have to buy a socket to torque the nut for assembly.

I only had to back the nut off a few turns to loosen it just enough to get the clips to fall right out.
Heres the washer and clips. clips and washer slipped right off.

I'm hoping the new brass washer will tighten up my top nut clearance.
The washer has a groove worn in it on the side you can't see when its installed. Hard to see in the pic.

I'll order the new brass washer and clips and we'll see how it works next spring... I'll update when I install the new parts, to see what my new clearance measurement is.

thanks to everyone for the help, I hope pcmpete updates us as well.:)

This was looking to be a bigger task than I first thought and was considering taking the upper unit a professional to do it for me, but after seeing the idea with the oak on the vice and will try it myself first.

Re: AQ130c idle and 270 drive clunk

I received the new brass washer and clips and installed them. My new clearence measurement is .014 which is within specs so I was happy to see that.

I put in a new seal under the top cover as well as a new oring at the one cap bolt and buttoned it up.

I hope pcmpete has similar results and it helps with his shifting cluck.

I wish, I haven't got round to the upper drive unit yet. I am trying to finish a rewiring project on the boat before i start, and with the holidays and now bad weather time has not been my best friend lately. Glade you got good results with yours captmello. I look forward to the 'in water' results from you.
