I cut grooves in the oak board which created more surface to grab the shaft.

I got out the 3 lbs hammer like PP40 said. I don't have the correct socket so I used my trusty 30mm open end wrench. Who'da thought I'd ever use that wrench? I'll have to buy a socket to torque the nut for assembly.

I only had to back the nut off a few turns to loosen it just enough to get the clips to fall right out.
Heres the washer and clips. clips and washer slipped right off.

I'm hoping the new brass washer will tighten up my top nut clearance.
The washer has a groove worn in it on the side you can't see when its installed. Hard to see in the pic.

I'll order the new brass washer and clips and we'll see how it works next spring... I'll update when I install the new parts, to see what my new clearance measurement is.
