Perhaps a bad batch of bearings?

Didn't want to read back on the history... pardon my laziness, but was this cam originally installed in the block?
If so, then it stands to reason the only difference now is your new bearing set. Can the machine shop source a new set of bearings to try out?

no. this is the 3rd set of fresh bearings.. the cam did come out of the block originally.
and when the bearings are not installed in the block. they go on so smoothly onto the camshaft... its the wierdest thing ever...
it seems when the bearings are in the block the ID is 73.86mm, and when they are fresh and out of the block they are 74.01 roughly, and the bearing surface on the cam is 74.00 (these measurements were done with another cheap harborfreight caliper)

Any possibility of getting your hands on genuine Volvo bearings (this may hurt) if you haven't? Just wondering if you have been using aftermarket examples, maybe some one from XYZ bearing company measured wrong, or misinterpreted the spec's for the block, and produced the wrong size.

well there is one more choice but it is the most money 80 bucks or so... Allbutwet has exact same engine and replaced the bearings he got them from IPDUSA. i have gotten mine from groton, carquest, and durabond. and so far no luck

That's one of the enthusiast sites I was looking at. I think they even may carry C grind cams like you have now (not that you need another cam). May be worth a call to them if they can answer technical questions. Maybe they can tell you who supply's their bearings, and you can figure out if it's worth a shot.

Here's one of the others I found;
http://www.v-performance.com/products/engine_parts.html

Seems like both take the B18/20 seriously. May be more likely to get a good set of bearings from them made in Europe.

Go back and read post #8. The cam bearing surfaces are the same diameter for the automotive and for the marine version. Why not just have the machine shop install the cam for you? They do hundreds of these and most likely have resolved this same issue before.
