been looking all over the net, cant find anything...

idles perfect at 850RPM, timing at 6 bdtc, 205 compression.. still runs rough at 3K - 3400 rpm, cant go over it...

has the correct prop on it, 14-17.

2 things left that i can think of that is stopping the power, carb or timing belt off... dont really feel like pulling everything apart to check the belt, (belt looks great no weather cracks and perfectly square...

anyhow, boat sat for 5 years with a full tank, redid everything, all filters distributor rebuild with pertronix kit, spark plugs, plug wires, starter, ran a seafoam treatment through it let it sit for a whole night with tons of seafoam in her, and still no go...

what should i start with? if timing is off 1 tooth is it noticable?? if not is there a way to check the timing belt with the heat exchanger on??

how hard is this solex carb to rebuild??? i know the air/fuel screw was turned by the previous owner that couldnt get this thing going...

what else should i look for thanks

boat is a 1988 arrowglass carisma 5.2meter..

oh and im at sealevel, monterey ca..

1 last thing, the exhaust flapper blew off when i was running her, anyway to get a new one?? my local shop said i need to get the whole unit... outdrive is a 275.. thanks

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

After 5 years of setting, I would start with carb rebuild and new gas.

If the timing belt was off a tooth somewhere, it wouldn't start, let alone idle ok.
Did you check the advance timing?

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

sounds like it is starving for fuel at high rpm. Check your plugs to see if they are white or not. Might be a fuel blockage in carb, or maybe fuel pump.

That carb is a piece of cake. Do your self a favor and pull it apart, clean it up, and stick it back together. I just did mine the other day. It was sitting for 2 years and had a ton of garbage in it. Look up the 131A manual on here It has procedures for carb rebuild in it.

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

cleaning the carb now, dirtiest carb ive ever seen.... probably a 1/4 inch of gunk in the bottom of the float bowl... all the gaskets look good, accelerator pump looks great.. all the jets are literraly green encrusted junk... hopefully this is the easiest way to clean it all out...

anybody know the correct air/fuel screw turns from the bottom??? ive seen a couple posts but they all say different things..

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

so after rebuilding it, cleaning it out, letting it sit for a couple hours in cleaner, runs clean, kinda stumbles when revving it up, and seems like no change in air/fuel screw when i turn it...

something wrong???

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

Stumble may be caused by accelerator pump not working. Mixture screws only work at idle and off-idle. If you screw the idle mixture in, and it doesn't die, you've got something wrong.

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

ok, now runs great, trying to check the timing, and the timing is set at 6 bdtc, and when i go to rev it up, it starts tickin a little, and then my timing light starts going haywire, and the rpm meter on the timing light goes to 9990... so i went and got a replacement, and its doing the same thing... the advance starts to move up to around 2000 rpms then the timing light goes nuts! what could be causing this?? all the wires are clear of the number 1 wire which is the one closest to the alternator and water impeller.. could it be the pickup on the wire is not working due to marine wires??

im freaking lost and the local volvo dealer dosnt want to help...

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

it has the pertronix coil and distributor kit...

checked the timing again with a old 1965 craftsman timing light, and whalla!

6 bdtc and in the mid 30's at 4K

it just seems to run really crappy, even though i rebuilt the carb... maybe bad wires?? the old owner said he redid all the stuff, plugs wires etc... but these wires look old.. could it be bad wires or cap??? usually on my other old trucks with a bad wire or cap/rotor, it misses and backfires and such... any input?

come to find out the old owner had the distributor off by one tooth and had it really advanced and he said it sounded like a gunshot, but seems like everything is still good no noises other than at 2500 rpm... motor runs smooth... im stumped...

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

Have you looked at or replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs etc.? Failing plug wires could be your problem. If they are arcing to ground, or the coil wire is arcing to the small terminals of your coil due to bad, cap, rotor, wires, or plugs. It will sure mess up the displays on the new timing lights.

took the cap to volvo and he said looks brand new, wires seem a little low, plugs are new, the timing light was not working due to the wires... seemed like a really weird issue, called the the equus company and he said sounds like the pickup isnt working correctly due to copper wires or old wires... sound right??

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

Check fuel pressure, should be around 4-6lbs...Also if fuel is coming out vent tubes ,your floats are set way to high or needle and seats are not closing tight.... Shouldn't be any fuel coming out of Doglegs(boosters) at idle..To set mixture screws,Turn them in all the way and come back out 1 and 1/2 turns.Set idle screw to lowest possible setting without stalling engine.Start by turning out both mixture screws 1/4 turn till u find best idle. Then readjust idle screw to preferred rpms.Good luck

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

no fuel coming out of anywhere except when revving it up... idle is perfect at 850 rpm...

Re: Aq131A Carb Help

should have fuel come out squirters when ya rev it up ,then once vacumm drops to zero, fuel will come out boosters.
