AQ171c Temperature Question

I have an AQ171c that seems to be running hot but I cannot find a running temperature range for this engine. I have a book and a pdf book on the engine and I cannot find the temperature range. I want to be sure the engine is not running hot. If I am running at low rpm's or idle it is around 190, but when I am running around the lake it runs at about 220 give a take a few degrees. Is this within the normal range. I replaced the impeller towards the end of last summer.

190? is normal running temp, and shouldn't go over that.
You might want to look at the water hose connection on the outdrive. They corrode under the hose and suck air when on plane.

When I rebuilt the engine I had it out of the boat. I put the engine back in and put that hose on. I cleaned up the end the hose fits on but I could probably see that leaking. I will pull that off and put on new hose and try to seal that end. Thank you for the reply.

I'm talking about the hose that hooks to the outdrive.

The hose to the outdrive is normally submerged when still, but is exposed (can suck air) when under way or on plane.

I have the same engine as you (AQ171C, although have not yet been in the water this summer...) and have a running temp ~185F while under way. Idle is a bit lower. I thought it was a bit high, but these engines run a tad hot. According to volvo, the thermostat starts to open at 180F (82C) and is fully open at 197F (92C) - that is if you have the correct thermostat...

I have collected tons of information and photos over the years. Be glad to share if interested, and also eager to learn more from other with this (fairly unique) set-up. Volvo was ahead of the times when they released this one.

I know the hose you are talking about Don; my response was not as clear as it should have been. When I hooked the engine up with out-drive I tried to clean the end of the water tube by sanding it smooth, but I may need to look at a better way to seal that or possibly finding one to buy. I was thinking that the rubber tube coming from the out-drive to the engine may possibly be dry-rotted in a spot. The boat sat for a long time before I rebuilt it. I will take all of that apart and make sure it is sealed really well. When I was putting all of that back together I did not think of that being an issue. Would it hurt anything to hook my water hose directly to the rubber tube going to engine to check for leaks? I do not want to damage my impeller. I was thinking of doing that to check for leaks before I take that hose completely off. Thanks for the help guys. I really appreciate your response Don. It may be time for a new hose connection and hose. I wouldn't recommend pressure testing. The seals on the copper tubes going to the pump could be blown out and damaged. Just hook a piece of clear hose between the tube that comes through the transom shield and the hose that connects to it. Then run the boat (in the water, not on muffs) if you see air bubbles in the clear hose, you are sucking air.

And to add the obvious; run while under way. Stationary you are unlikely to suck air.
However, great idea for how to test it.
