AQ190 or not

I just picked up a 1974 Glastron Project boat with a Ford 302 marine engine. The outdrive clearly is a Volvo Penta 270 drive but it badged as 'Glastron', but the engine has headers with the name 'Glastron' on them also. Is the engine the same as the volvo aq190 which is only listed for 1976-1977?
The headers have no risers, they just go thru a 90 degree bend down into the y-pipe, and the distributor is a mallory YL 512CV which is different from standard aq190's
Can anyone have any details on this engine/setup?

Thanks

Re: AQ190 or not

There are a few differences between the Volvo and the Glastron version. Problem is, headers for either are NLA, non existant. No such thing. Gone. Not even in aftermarket,. and yes, they were only available in 76 and 77.
If you head up to the adults only sticky, there are manuals for the 270 outdrive, and the AQ190 engine that may help if your manifolds are ok.

Re: AQ190 or not

We've had a few of these old Glastrons come through here recently. Seems like they were buying their own marinizing parts and bolting them on. Raw water pump, thermo housings, exhaust manifolds, non of them are Volvo.

What are you planning to do with it?? Now that you've got the great news.

Those manifolds won't work without a lot of modifications to the system. There is an approximate 90? bend and size differences that need to be addressed for those to work.

Re: AQ190 or not

At present the headers look and sound ok. But if I do need to replace them hear are the options I have thought of:

1. Buy aftermarket headers with with rear exits , no risers (Barr Marine Manifolds)
2. Buy aftermarket headers with center risers and fabicating a connection to the exit 302 y-pipe or y-pipe for a chevy (which I have lying around with the transom shield to suit.
3. Thru Hull, plenty of thru hull systems and jet boat around the lakes where i am.

The motor itself seems to run ok on muffs, and compression in all cylinders is up where it should be. Correct me if i am wrong, but shouldn't parts from omc, mercruiser and volvo fit this motor.

I bought the Glastron just for the motor for $100 and planned on putting the motor into a 17" ski boat, but the longer the Glastron sits in my barn the more I like the look of it, and I might restore it, it needs new floor, stringers, transom and some hull damage repair, but i love working with wood and fiberglass.

I have photos of 'the old beast' in another topic here on iboats, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=371426

I plan pulling the motor out this weekend, so I should be able get better photos.

One more thing, the motor mounts ARE NOT height adjustable, can I just put mounts from a Merc 888 (or similar) when go to refit the motor with the new stringers.

Thanks guys, both Don and Capmello, your advice and knowledge is second to none.

Re: AQ190 or not

I would just make sure the drivetrain is solid. motor and drive. You said you've had it running, did the outdrive shift in and out of gear smooth. You could be setting yourself up for some headaches when it comes to parts but who knows. Sounds like your happy with the compression.

Yes, parts made for the 302s should bolt on but need to work with the rest. I'm wondering how you find the right impeller for that engine.

My knowledge is very limited and doesn't compare the the wealth of knowledge Don carries around. His head must be huge. But thanks for the kind words.

Have you drained the outdrive yet? pulled the upper gear box off? How about the intermediate bearings?

Take pics and let us know what you find.:)

You might not like this idea, but It might be the best. If you are planning on rebuilding boat. Salvage the Motor and drive. Find a donor boat with a gm based motor and do the swap.

I was looking for a GM v8, but the Ford came along at a good price.

You got it "Cheap", because you can't get parts for it. Think about it.

I got it cheap because the hull is in bad shape and PO had no clue what to do with it. One person's junk is another person's jewel. ;)

There are plenty of aftermarket starters, alternators, distributors, etc..that will fit the ford 302 marine and some header options, if needed.

Not every toolbox has a checkbook in it, plus I like to build and experiment. The motor runs, good compression, the drive shifts smoothly, that that alone is worth is worth its weight in gold to me, if anything else comes from this project it will be a bonus :)

Plus if the headers are like gold dust to find, maybe I could sell them for a profit :)
