Hi,

I recently bought a 87 Bayliner Capri with a volvo penta 225e 275 od. it had a messed up propeller 14 x 19, but I'm thinking its the wrong prop for the boat. Does anybody know what size prop i should get?

thanks in advance.

go here ..get needed info, then we can help you. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=287818

ESSENTIAL DATA REQUIRED
When posting a question about propellers, you cannot get a reasonable answer unless you provide the following information in your post: Items 1-4 are essential for meaningful response to most questions.
1) Performance issue you are trying to correct. (get out the hole faster and use it to tow knee boards,etc..)
2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum. (aluminum)
3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required). (14 x 19) don't know if this is the correct one for my boat or my goal (see #1)
4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful)--
5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP AQ225e 275od Volvo Penta, 225hp
6) Boat make model, year, length and weight --Bayliner Capri 1987, 19ft

without question number 4 being answered I can only guess, questions 1-4 are essential (necessary). every motor has a recommended operating RPM range, if you are under that you lug your motor and will greatly decrease its useful life, if you go over you will also risk damaging/blowing your engine. So you left out the most important piece of info. but if you want to get out of the hole faster get a 15P 4 blade prop and a set of trim tabs, I guarantee you will shoot out of the hole like a rocket, but you very likely will over-rev your motor. If it was my boat, I would get a set of trim tabs first, install them and see what the 19P prop does then. If you still need to reprop (and you likely will not) then we can make an educated decision. We also need to know the manufacturer recommended RPM range for your motor. my guess is 4200-4600, but some motors are set up for more high performance, and can go over 5K RPMs.

I recomend taking your prop to a local prop shop, get a repair estimate and they will recomend the correct prop for your application. They can also vent and cup the prop for max power and efficiency. The shop I use has demo props for in water tests before you buy. My rebuilder charges the same for props as mail order companies and does not charge me shipping. Find a recomended shop in your area!

max RPM is 4400..so you should prop for as close to that as you can get with out going over, with the boat unloaded. So the next piece of info needed is what the WOT RPMs are with your current 19 pitch prop. I could then tell you the correct pitch for your boat and I recommend installing trim tabs first before repropping. you will love your trim tabs.
