Are all Keys Created Equal?

I have a Mercury Bigfoot 9.9 with Quicksilver remote controls. When I bought it from the dealer the mechanic couldn't find the key that went with it so he gave me his from his key ring. I still have that one but I need a spare.

Can I just buy another one (are they all the same across manufacturers) or do I need model numbers and such?

The mechanic probably has a ring with each of the Merc/Quicksilver keys. The keys have a code stamped on them and the dealer should be able to get you a 2nd key.

It says S4. Is that what you mean?

s4 is a Ilco key blank part number. It appears he used a blank, and had it cut. The (oem) keys will come stamped with a number, and a following letter. ie: 1A,1B,2F etc.

What Yeg said. The only other way is to open the control and see what number is on the switch. I would go back to the dealer or to A local Big Box or hardware store before opening the control. You have a key to cut a new one from as long as the store has the right blank.

I think I may have better luck at the local mom & pop hardware. It's the kind of place that's has all the weird stuff from 40 years ago, and where you can buy one nail, a pickle, a birthday card and a cherry coke.
