I've got a friend who recently bought a 90 something Bayliner 19' open-bow ski boat with a 120HP outboard. He says it's a 2 stroke and that he must mix gas and oil. Is this true or is there a chance that he's wrong? He also said it was a 250HP and that it had 6 cylinders. Only when I showed him the big 120 numbers on the side of the cover and the 4 spark plug wires did he realize otherwise.

That was most likely a Force which has always been 2-stroke. In fact the vast majority of outboards build before the mid 90s were 2-strokes. But there are a few that have always been 4-strokes. Honda is the one almost everybody knows about. Back in the 50s and 60s there were also Homelite and Lausen, but those were never considered mainstream brands.
