my 75' 70hp johnson died this summer and my neighbor has a 1983 75hp chrylser that has been sitting in his barn(on a bad boat) for several years. I realize that the carbs and the water pump will need to be rebuilt(carbs) and replaced(water pump) but of the 2 boat shops in town 1 sez stay away and the other sez get a merc....In looking at the internet it seems no one has much good to say about chryslers... whats the deal? are they good motors? are there years or models to stay away from and if so what are they??? can parts still be aquried reasonably?thanks for any insight!!

Re: are chrysler motors that bad?

hello
I owened many. some with the motorolla ign system were problematic:) :) . we would convert them to the battery powered system. we also found that if the cooling system and fuel systems were left to degrade they would burn pistons. we also found that every so often replace the head gasket. the puddle drains and fuel pumps needed periodic service. but overall with decent maint and a knowledgable tech they lasted as well as the rest.
but like many engines if you run it till it quits by allowing a subsystem to degrade they died rapidly.
I will bet your 70 died of neglect. most do. either the fuel system degrades or the cooling system degrades and poof no motor. notice I say degrade not quit.

good luck and keep posting

fishkiller - Let me introduce you to the red search function at the top of the page. Go there and enter "Chrysler" as a search argument. Read the good, the bad and the ugly.

Chryslers had a low cost and that is why many thousands of Americans were dooped into buying them. They are slower, burn more fuel, and broke down very often....leave it in the barn!

Re: are chrysler motors that bad?

PMM Makes an important point here, Fishkiller.

If "is it that bad?" means is a Chrysler 75 that needs repair as bad as a Johnny 70 that needs repair the answer is no, it is not that bad. It is worse.

You are far better off fixing the Johnny unless it has exploded and you can't find all the pieces.

Good luck. :)
