Are you guys boating less because of gas prices?
Personally is not a big problem because I can cruise most of the day with 10 gals with my little 50hp. but what about you guys with big engine(s).

While I too have a 50hp and can fish all day on a few gallons, it has affected me. All of the people with big gas sucking engines are now staying very close to their home ports. I find that the in-shore areas are much more crowded than they were last year.

It does effect me.... I pay more for my gas when I go boating :)

I have a 2.5liter 120 HP sterndrive, goes all day on a tank.

Nope...taking the boat camping on monday, already spent over $100 on fuel and oil. And I'll have to fill up again while I'm at the lake. Comes out to about $3.20/gallon after mixing two cycle oil...

yes i would love to have lower gas prices as does everybody else, but no it has not affected my boating activities. i have a 2005 150 merc XR6(carb, 2.5 V-6 2 stroke) and a 1992 merc 40 ( 4 cyl 2 stroke) that definatly both like to drink gas, but maybe since i just bought the new boat it has made me want to keep going out and drive it more.

Feeling the burn so to speak. Been having to make sure I get more folks on board each trip, 4 way split is not too bad, but with most of my trips going 30+ miles off shore and twin 175 two strokes slurping down the gas it is having an effect.......

30k for 4 strokes is looking cheaper by the month.

Re: Are gas prices having and effect on your boating activities?

My problem is that the fish won't quit biting!!! :)

Last weekend we were hooking Dolphin three at a time working a weed line. Never could get a fourth line out. Probably could have done it all day but ran out of trolling bait and moved on to bottom fishing. Still pulled two very nice groupers plus some other assorted eatibles!

Down side is we burned 85 gallons and ended up with about 30 pounds of filets, ran us around 6 bucks a pound for the fish.

If I went to four strokers I could probably get somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.7 to 1.9 miles per gallon, as it is I get about one at 30 kts.

I use a gas trailer to tank my boat so I can avoid the dock prices. Been trying to limit my long range runs, can do about 200 miles comfortably but have been sticking to 80 to 90 round trip to save some money. What are some of you guys having to pay at the dock?

It sucks for sure but my fun in boating usually ends up in hanging out in coves swimming and fishing so Gas usually lasts awhile anyway.. It was a shocker filling up and paying 65 bucks instead of the normal 35 or so though.

Gas prices caused me to sell my 23 footer with a 225 2 stroke and opt for a canoe. I'm looking for a flats skiff with a 40 to 50 on it. I couldn't afford burning 22 gal an hour at WOT at today's prices.
Stalker

I always -try- to look at it from this perspective; there is a lot of people who can't afford boating because of boat prices. Many of us are lucky to have a boat at all. Gas is a premium expense for a luxury item. Enjoy it, and just try to forget about how thirsty the boat is. If you are lucky enough to be out boating with friends and family, it is money well spent.

My 0.02

That's the thing...everybody complains and cancels road trips because of the prices, but when it comes down to it, it only adds a few extra bucks onto each trip. Why cancel a vacation over an extra $20 in gas? It's like those people that run out and spend an extra $10,000 on hybrids just to save a few cents per gallon and somehow think they're saving money.

I plan things out a bit more, but in the end I have a paid for boat so all I spend is on gas. I only use 7-10 gallons in a day, that is a whole bunch less money than people are paying fishing charters to do the same thing I am doing.

In June was going to junk my old 25 and buy a rig with a 90. Glad I didn't do that now. I can still go out all day on 6 gallons.

Big effect on my boating habits...I'm going out more!
There are a lot less boats out there, ramps are less crowded, etc since all the casual boaters are staying home.
Much more enjoyable out there with fewer boats.
Now if the charter boats would just pack it in too all would be great.

Re: Are gas prices having and effect on your boating activities?

My 24' boat has a 109 gal tank ($300 fillup) and a Yam 225 (carbed) which, as they say, can pass everything except the fuel dock.

I have definitely cut back on leisure cruises and fishing trips. I can't afford it. I am going to dump the boat as soon as I can and get some kind of skiff with a 30 hp engine! Too bad.

You know..... its not really the fuel for boat thats stopping me, its the gas to get there! I have to drive 120 miles for water. So, sad to say, guess im gonna winterize early and hope better things for next season.

It's getting to the point now where any increase in efficiency of diesel is nearly outweighed by the extra cost of diesel fuel...
