Re: Are handheld vhf radios any good?

Well, I have a Humminbird handheld model VHF5 (5 watts in high power mode). While I have the handheld only as a backup of the fixed 25W radio that we have in the boat, I am very pleased with. It is full of features (dual scan, triple scan, full scan, memory presets, instant channel 16, favorite channel preset, iluminated display, key lock, etc) and very easy to use. It has a decent range, and actually, it goes more than the regular five miles when there are no obstructions (seashore) or you are in an elevated place. I feel it adds safety to my fishing trips, as you may loss electric power onboart. Also, I have it in a sealed bag that fits the radio and its knobs, so it should survive in the water and you can continue to operate it. I have found that it is perfect for shore to boat communication when you are in the marina, or near home when navigating the channels where we live. The batteries last a full day under normal to moderate use (however, I guess the more you talk, the faster the batteries drain). If you use it only a few times during a trip, the batteries will last for several days. I have it with rechargeable batteries and wall charger. Only annoying thing is to remember to plug it for chargind the day before the trip.

I would like to have an icom handheld, they look better than mine. Finally, I recommend to have both, a good fixed radio and a handheld unit.

I hope this helps you.

I am a ham radio operator. Handie talkies {HT's} are fine for close work you can operate them with your vhf antenna with a bnc connecor and run them on 1-2watts and get better range like that, than with the rubber dummy load. The rubber antenna has so much loss to them. Anthor point any exernal antenna you should make sure the antenna is tuned using a swr meter. Swr {standing wave ratio} measures the amount of rf being reflected back to the radio. A flat tuned antenna is 1.2:1 but up to 1.5:1 is fine....any thing more the rf heats up the finals in the radio the out put drops. and you will burn them up. Don't buy a cheap antenna spend the money on something good. Check you local ham radio store many companys like Diamond or Larson make mono, dual and triband antennas. Remember to buy the antenna with the most gain for every 3db's you double the effective output.1w out 10db gain= 10w erp. Get the picture...Ted
