Agreed. You take the O/B's off of that boat and it looks like a sleek, sexy machine. The O/B's just cause the sleek lines of the boat to come to an abrupt halt at the end of the boat. It's not "ugly" with them on there, it just looks better without them.

In any case, he's rocking 600HP with those monsters. He could have 1050HP from Merc 525's for about the same cost more than likely. It's just a lot easier to add cubic inches and HP to an I/O when you don't have to add more engines.

Side note: He's also driving from the wrong side. :p

There are boats that steer from the port side. There isn't a hard fast rule of which side you steer from

Skip the whole thing and get a jet engine.

The new DCB`s are very nice. That orange f-35 will run 170 all day long as long as you have the stones to keep it there.

BlkY2k,

I have seen those and they are nice. I wish I could afford one.

I'm aware of that, it was a joke. Hence the smiley face.

I prefer a few transom bunnies on the swim platform vs a pair of outboards myself.

Of course it's hard to beat the sound of a well tuned big block firing up.

Probabally just a regional thing. You don't see outboards on anything but pontoons and fishing boats around here.

Funny, you almost never see I/O down here in FL any more unless it's in a Cigarette boat, or something like that. The old I/Os definitely seem to be going the way of the Dodo. Outboards are so powerful and reliable nowadays that it's cheaper and easier to just bolt one on the transom and go. I was just watching an episode of a local boat show where they were converting an old '60s I/O into a modern 225 hp E-tec outboard. There is even a 500+ hp outboard now made by a company called "Seven" (7?), which basically uses a Cadillac V8.

That's unfair! The CVX20 jet drive is arguably the best looking design Glastron/Carlson ever built. The outboard version was called the "CVX20 Sprint". 'Posed to be for pulling skiers.

I think, or hope, that inboards & io's & ob's & jet drives & even blow boats will be with us for awhile. Down here it's a mixed bag. You'd think the OBs would massively outnumber anything else but that's not the case. Lotsa IOs & inboards.

You have to admit the there is nothing like they sound of a well tuned 5.7. Few things make that puff and rumble.

Thats a Doug Wright poker edition catamaran. For those who dont know Dougs Cats dominate their classes in offshore racing.

I`d just like to say I grew up around outboards and I`ll agree that sterndrives do have a cleaner transom, But, to me they just look like something is missing back there. I like the look of a pair of big ole outboards hanging on the back, just looks right.

http://youtu.be/WleeA2d6IeU 112mph in testing but Hes been over 115 since then.

You know what they say, "Big boat; little.......". Not my cup of tea at all. This is what most folks like to run around here in the skinny water. Sleek, fast, can handle a chiop better than you might think, can run ALL day on 3 gallons of gas and cruise at 30 mph no problemo. Most are light enough to lift and put in your truck. A different animal to be sure, but lots more fun.

Thing is, that 115/125 O/B(more-so the 125), will probably out perform the 270hp I/O. Or, at the very least be equal too. Just can't look at horsepower. Need to look at hp to weight ratio too...... Besides, a 250hp O/B for your first boat?

i realize i would not need the same o/b hp to achieve my goal but i'd definitely want more than 125hp in an o/b. my boat is 22.5' and it will GPS 50mph (49.6 actually) with 65 gallons of fuel and 7 people. i just don't see a 125hp o/b doing that on a 22 foot boat.

i borrowed a 21' trophy once with a 115hp yamaha 2 stroke on it and it was a pig (38mph unloaded), i got 6 people on that boat and it was even worse, maybe 32-34mph at WOT.

i also have a tarnished view of outboards from when i was a child. when i was growing up, at a very early age, my grandfather had some kind of 18' bowrider that would easily go 40mph, i loved riding in that boat, it was the most exciting thing for me as a child.

he got rid of that boat in favor for a 18' pontoon with a 35hp merc, which i absolutely hated. it was slow, loud and ugly. i don't care if it seats 10 people, the only time i saw that boat on a plane was with one person going down current.

as a child i got this idea that i wanted a boat, nobody was going to tell me how fast i could go and where i was allowed to go.

i remembered my grandfather's i/o as being fast and fun, the o/b as being slow and dumb. i had dreams of the pontoon boat with an evinrude 75 on it like my neighbor's but it never happened.

i am pleased with my boat, the 270hp i/o is powerful, it's not as much of a fuel hog as i thought it would be, parts are pretty cheap, i have been able to work on it myself and the built-in full width swim platform is worth its weight in gold.

Despite my I/O comments, there are plenty of really fast OB applications. The tarnished view you got was for unequal applications.

Re: Are inboards already or going to be something fewer of us use?

I don't think it's really fair to say I/O's and inboards are on the way out. If you live near the coast you realize that only the smaller boats have outboards.

When I do see a bigger boat with outboards I just think "dayyyyyuuummmm that was expensive". Boats with $90,000 worth of outboard hanging off the back. For $90,000 I can build you one hulluva a setup with 2 I/O's.

I guess I'm just not a 'go out and buy a fancy new boat' kind of guy. I bought a 1976 skipjack and I love that it has a BBC (454) in it. The parts have been incredibly easy to find an inexpensive. Finding information when I've needed it has seemed easy enough. I realize that the outdrive is just a tablet dissolving on the ocean and there is more maintenance for thinks like bellows and more risk of your boat sinking at the dock, but I dunno.......I should have my boat all finished and put back together for less than $10,000 (with a full engine rebuild) and that's less than 1 outboard would cost me for a new boat.

Me, ... I'll take an inboard any day over an outboard or inboard/outboard, right down to my 16' Jersey speed skiff
