Are New AGM Batteries Fully charged when new?

Ok.......silly question here.

I just put in two new Lifeline AGM Batteries today.........I forgot to ask and sort of assumed that these Batteries are fully charged when bought new??

Will I be able to jump in the boat tomorrow and take off ......with a smile

Or do I have to put them on a charger first.....

If they've been on the shelf awhile chances are they are not fully charged. No battery, AGM or otherwise can be assumed to be fully charged. Why not put them on a charger and see?

May start, may not. Put a charger on them and make sure they are fully charged.

the new batteries i get are usually 80% charged.

They should be ready to go. Deep cycle batteries and especially AGM's should be fully charged when you buy them or the seller is risking product loss. You should be able to check them with a voltmeter. If they (AGM) show 14+ volts then they've probably been shelf maintained properly. Anything less and I'd take them back as they could be irreversably damaged. I have one sitting in my garage right now that the original owner let sit for six months without charging. It's shot and only a year old. What a waste.

And make sure your charger has an "AGM charge profile" as these batteries have special charging requirements.

While they will probably have enough juice to start, I never assume any new battery is fully charged. Typically, the battery store will check and charge if necessary before you walk out the door.
Of course, not everyone goes to a battery store that provides this service.
