Are new shims a must?

Hi all,

Need to replace the prop shaft, so need to remove the driveshaft. Two questions:

1. If the driveshaft is removed and then reassembled without changing anything, does it still need to be shimmed with the shimming gauge tool?

2. Is it advisable to re-use the same shims or should I replace with new ones of the same specification?

OK, the service manual (Seloc) says re-shimming measurements are not needed if no components have been changed. So I'll go with that - unless any of the experts here feel differently.

Now all I need is to know if it's better to re-assemble with existing shims or replace them with new ones of the same specification?

What motor are you talking about; model # year, HP. Someone can help you if they have info.

If you're just replacing the prop shaft no shimming is needed. Just make sure the shims you took out go back in the right place.

Sorry Will, I thought it was generic. The motor is Evinrude 1997 90hp. I'm replacing the prop shaft due to impact damage. The vertical drive shaft (actually two pcs) contains shims.

My Seloc service manual seems to imply that shims should be replaced with ones of the same thickness - but it is not 100% clear on this point. Are shims considered consumables (like seals, bearing etc)? Or as suggested by Boobie, if they pass inspection the old shims should be re-used?
