Are Original Gaskets needed or can Gasket maker be used?

Hello,

I am in the process of replacing the water pump impeller on my 1966 85hp Evinrude Speedifour. I have removed the upper and lower gearcase and I would like to replace the seals while I have all this apart. I am wondering if I need to locate original seals for everything I want to replace, or if I can use something like Permatex's Right Stuff gasket maker on this?

The temp range is -75 to 450degrees Fahrenheit on the Right Stuff line, but I am wondering if there is a drawback to using it over the oem gaskets.

Thanks for you thoughts,

I would try to find the gaskets first.
I never use any permitex or silly-cone on anything that has a gasket.
When i do feel the need i use just enough to ast as a glue to hold the gasket in place.
If the surfaces are clean then there is no need for that junk.

If all else fails then i guess you can use it instead of a gasket.

Hi,

That kit doesn't seem to have the gaskets I am looking for. I will check and see if I can find the right kit, that is not a problem. I was just looking for more of a general answer about using the permatex.

I talked to a mechanic this morning about it and he said Permatex Anaerobic gasket maker would be the way to go, and that he has used it in the past for the gaskets on the lower unit. I have also seen it on several of the boating sites for sale, but wasn't sure if it was commonly used.

I'll see what I can do to get the seal kit.

Thanks,
Jim

You can always cut a new gasket. Even easier if you have the old one to use as a template. A couple of hole punches and a pair of fine tip scissors are generally all you need...

I just ordered them. Napa carries the ones I am looking for pn 18-2869. They are for the gear extension. They have to be shipped in though so it will be a couple days. Seems like everything has to be ordered :).

Just a note,
I never use gasket maker where a real gasket was used. It NEVER came out well for me. I always had a leak and it's bad about squeezing out and getting into stuff. It has it's place for sure, and I do use it, just never in place of a cut gasket, and wouldn't recommend doing it for sure!

Just a note... the part linked to above on iboats is 18-2869. I looked at it and the picture is nothing like what I was looking for. However, part number 18-2869 in the Napa Marine catalog shows a picture of exactly what I was looking for, so I ordered it from there. Either one could be incorrect though.
