Are Outdrive and Outboard Steering Cables the Same?

Hi. I just discovered this forum and it seems great!

My question: I recently bought a "project boat", which is a 22ft cabin cruiser. It originally had a tired 145hp volvo stern drive which was removed and the boat converted to outboard propulsion(Johnson 130hp). The original helm and steering cable were kept for the outboard and everything seems to fit fine. However, I did notice that the motor turning angle is not much at all. I would say maybe 40 degrees hard over. The angle is equal when the motor is turned hard over to port or starboard. The original outdrive was not power assisted in any way.

The outboard has a link arm that I believe is the correct one for that motor. This length isn't adjustable. Is there any way to find out if it is, in fact, the right link arm and right length?

Are all the steering rods the same length? Is it possible that the steering rod on the I/O cable is shorter than the outboard needs for its steering tube?

Is there any rule for what angle a motor should be relative to the transom when turned hard over? I know the outboard turning angle is limited by the mechanical steering, and I can get an extra 5 degrees or so if I disconnect the link arm and turn the motor side to side against its stops by hand.

I haven't had the boat in the water yet. All in all, I would say the work done on it was very good, but the guy couldn't keep the boat due to financial reasons. He did an excellent job modifying the transom and building a motor well. Now it's up to me to work out the final details. I've never had a boat with an outboard bigger than 30hp so this is uncharted territory for me. :) I just want to be sure everything is right before the boat is launched.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Best Regards,
Dennis

Welcome to iboats realboat.....always nice to "see" a new face.

Sounds like your rig is correct. Steering cable travel is universal. Meaning the travel on brand X is the same on brand Y...

Unless the steering link is a hobbled in part, it sounds like you got all the turning your going to get. You could take it to a local dealer ship and have a wrench verify that the link is the correct one.

Since you didn't post an engine year...I looked at a 95' 130 steering link kit. Two different kits were offered. One kit for engines w/o TNT and the other for engines with TNT. The difference being how the link connected to the engine. Different hardware....bushing and washers. This was to accomidate the engine tilt.

Might also take a look at the engines steering arm...where the link is connected. Usually two threaded connection holes. One further out than the other. I believe in your case, the link would be connected to the inside hole.

In any event....take it to a wrench for an eye ball look. Can't hurt.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have on your rig. Most of all....ENJOY IT!!!

Re: Are Outdrive and Outboard Steering Cables the Same?

Many thanks, OBJ. Guess I just needed a "sanity check". :D

The steering rod travels its full length side to side, and the motor turns smoothly to the same angle each side, so I guess all is well. Nevertheless, when I get the boat to the marina for the season, I'll have the pro look at it.

Since you ask the year, I have another question for you. My engine is a 1989 130hp Johnson. I have a chance to get a 1990 factory service manual. Do you think the two years are close enough together in design where this manual will be useful?

Thanks again for your help. I really do appreciate it.

Best Regards,
Dennis

Hey realboats....how 'bout posting yer' model number. They didn't make 130's in 89'....not that I know of. The closest I can find is in 95'. So....if ya' would, post the model number so we can see what's what.

Hi Again Obj! The model number stamped on the engine is J130TX-CEM.

I know what you mean about finding it listed. All I've been able to find is 120-140 hp or something like that. I've never actually seen a specific 130hp listed. I always wind up with these oddball engines.

Thanks again for your help!

Best Regards,
Dennis
