Are Outdrive Washers/Coolers - worth the venture?

I've read that outdrive washers/coolers help to keep the outdrives from cooling down to quickly thus extending the life of the outdrive.<br /><br />Anyone have any info/results on using one of these tubing type outdrive washers/coolers?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />CaptainHook

Outdrive showers COOL the drive to keep the temp down.......NOT to keep it from cooling too quickly. Think about it-how would spraying cool lake/sea water on it keep it from cooling?<br />Yes, they work-results are well documented.<br />You don't have to run big HP thru your outdrive to see the benefit.<br />Cheap insurance.

I am interested in getting one of these showers. The way I understand it is when coming off plane and settling back down into the water your outdrive cools very rapidly, leading to chalking. By installing a shower it keeps your outdrive cooler so when you come of plane and "settle in" there isn't as much temperature difference.<br /><br />DougV>

Both of you are totally missing the whole idea on drive coolers!!!!<br />The idea is not to prevent some nonexistent shocking upon reimmersion - It's to keep the outdrive cooler while you are ramming all that HP through it.<br />The chalking is from mineral deposits in the water cooking off the drive...not from some shock theory. Water boils off the drive due to the tremedous heat generated at power. Keeping it cool buy installing a drive shower lowers the temp of the internals leading to a longer life.<br />That's it. Period.
