Are red plugs interchangable??

I have a 1989 Evinrude 25hp (model E25ELCEB) - when I got it, the male end of the "red plug" had 7 pins in it. I broke a pin recently, but cannot find a perfect match to replace it - though I have seen a lot of used red plugs listed online with 8 pins.

The pin that broke is for the overheat buzzer.

The female end of my red plug (that goes to the controls) has 10 holes, eight of which have receptors in them.

Is it okay to replace my broken male 7-pin plug with an 8-pin plug?

Thanks for the help,
Mike

open up the black coating around wiring before plug, find your wire and hardwire it to the otherside.
