Hello, I am about to reassemble my lower unit. I have purchased all of the internally moving parts inluding all bearings, gears, and seals. I am wondering if this particular drive shaft actually needs a SHIM. The exploded views I have seen, show a SHIM, but when I go to order one, the selections start for 60HP and up to 2500HP? Does anyone know what size (if necessary) shim I need?

To know what shims you need, the driveshaft and pinion gear have to be installed in a special fixture with the correct adapters to measure the height from the machined surface of the pinion gear to the inside flange of the driveshaft bearing carrier. By following the steps in the service manual and using the correct shimming gauge part number, you can calculate the total amount of shims required.

The special tools are very expensive so it would be best to have an authorized dealer do the shimmiing procedure for you, then you can install the gearcase parts on your own, as long as you follow the manual.
