Re: Are there any musicians here?

I played in school then quit because of crabby parents... drums were too loud for them... I had nowhere to play. Then I 'jammed' here and there a bit as a back-up but I never had a kit... until this year. I've decided I'm playing from here on out! This part is breaking news... my best bud was in a great 'classic rock' band 10 years ago and they've recently started hanging out again. Looks like the band is reuniting with me on the drums... I'm all over it!
I have a Pearl maple 5 pc. w/ Sabians (rack) and DW kicks. I'll probably upgrade the drums next year to something like SuperNova has... Taye's are super nice. I'm also looking for a used Roland TD6KX (mesh) kit... drums with a volume control!
Cheers!

The stevieray collection - left to right: 1973 Rickenbacker 4001, 2004 Ibanez S470DX, 2006 Aria MAC 50, 2000 Jackson RR3R-TR, 1999 Ovation 1866-5 Legend, 1999 Ovation S868-4GC Elite

I just like to jam along with rock records from the '70's on - I get a kick out of being able to copy stuff now that I couldn't dream of playing when I was a teenager (somehow it just came to me?). Note the headphones - mainly to keep me out of divorce court!

mikeandronda,

Have you found a good reliable tab site since the Publishers hammered down last winter? I used one in the past I believe was called PowerTabs or powertab archive. What I'm finding over the last few months is most seem to require membership or other types of red tape so to speak.

Not that I'm opposed to a membership , I just want to know that it's a good userfriendly site good for the powertab program on my pc.

Thanks

Have a good and SAFE Thanksgiving everyone.

Re: Are there any musicians here?

My grandfather was a guitar player in the Grand Ole Opry and he and my mother had a band that played on a weekly Nashville TV show "Live From Marhaden" where I was a small square-dancer (I was 5 at the time).

Growing up, I was surrounded by musicians; jam sessions weekly at my grandparents home, my mom and uncle were both musical. I started playing clarinet in Jr. High, and graduated to a Tama Drumset in High School where I played in a punk band called Chapel of Roses; we actually got gigs at some Nashville bars. The guitar player in that band was Jeff Cease, he went on to play for The Black Crowes. I graduated to bass guitar when I started college and made a decent living playing frat parties and nightclubs on the SouthEast circuit. Later moved to LA thinking we would get a recording contract only to find we were minnows in a HUGE pond; moved back to Nashville and was picked up under a development deal with a label. Toured the US, Europe, and Asia opening for some pretty big hair bands in the 90s; went from making decent money playing the college circuit to making zero money opening in large arenas. Had a lot of fun for a while, then it turned into a job, then a nightmare. The lead singer, and my best friend since childhood, was manic-depressive; apparently this disorder really blossoms in your 20s, throw in some self-medication, and presto! you have yourself a human time-bomb!

Later I did some session work in Nashville, then just decided to write music and record with good friends; after all I had a degree in recording industry management that was just gathering dust.

Now I record with friends occasionally, I played a bit of 6-string backup for a girl in Tampa on a few gigs, and I break out the acoustic at home to sing very silly songs. This seems much easier on my vital organs!

I sing, but I only sing for money, because when I start singing people are willing to pay almost anything to get me to stop!

Re: Are there any musicians here?

Used to play, had a band, etc. Was also in live music production for about 8 years. These days, my photography jones and boating jones take all my spare change so no more guitars.

Dumbest thing I ever did, though, was to sell a prototype Washburn D50S dreadnaught acoustic. From what I understand, the guitar was never put into production and I had one of only a few in existence. For those of you who know recent Washburns, this was in an entirely different league - think in terms of the old "George Washburn & Sons" guitars. Even the guys at Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island, NY thought it was pretty cool.

Yes I bet most musicians that are a bit on in years have many regrets of the equipment they have traded, sold or lost back in the day. I still own my first "Real" guitar.......My Charvel 375 deluxe is still my main (Metal) guitar.......Had it for over 18 yrs........Was $1,700 new.....I paid $300 for it.......Probably worth, oh I dont know $300 today :D

Re: Are there any musicians here?

Edumacated in classical "french" saxophone style. Played in more symphonies and musicals requiring reeds than I care to remember. Did the drum corps thing. Got tired of living in a house with 10 other musicians fighting over the last box of mac and cheese and so I'm a network engineer in the interim, saving all my money and am on track to retire at 45 and play again. I play for myself, though not much at all the last 10 years.

When I do get a chance there's a quartet of friends playing anything from chamber music to jazz, or sometimes even Zappa and thrash metal, in my basement. I dabble on a fender electro-acoustic, and 1973 Thomas "moog" organ, and a 1978 American P-Bass with Bartolini's I picked up in exchange for some engine work on a professors car in college. I merely pound on the cheap craigslist drum set when I'm angry at work.

Re: Are there any musicians here?

I began playing trombone in elementary school - played all the way through HS . I got a 6 string Castillia acoustic at 13 .I was BEGGIN for an eletric .Damn that Santa! Saved my Mowing money and bought a cheap electric w/fuzz box from a guy at school, then shortly after got an Aims Eclipsor 412 amp .Can Santa Hear Sabbath???
Got Married, got rid of all but the acustic.
Got the Big D - and learned an over looked appreciation for CW. I've picked up a Kramer Ferrington ,and Crate acustic stereo chorus amp. I began playing with bunch of friends(all brothers) but with 3 guitars + drums I enden up switching to Bass ( I was out classed too) Got a Washburn AB-10 acustic electric and peavey basic 112. We basicly play at all holiday partys, cookouts an occaisional local bar gig but nothing that will make us rich 'n famous. Oh, I do a good job wailing out "Shanty" on harp too.

Re: Are there any musicians here?

I really, really need to find someone who can program drum beats to complete some songs Im working on here........So if anybody knows how to or knows someone who can let me know. I have some pretty great musicians from accross the country and in Canada that we are putting together a few songs for a collaboration project that we want to get included on some C.D.s being released but are haveing a hard time getting the drums done in a quick enough amount of time.
