I just tested a 1977 6 hp evinrude motor that I picked up from a guy this past weekend. It is just a pull start. This is what I got consistently on both cylinders: first pull-40pst, second pull-50psi, third pull-60psi, and on the fourth pull I got 70psi and that is as high as it would get. I usually do a compression test on a motor to see if it is worth messing with, but I don't know if 70 psi is a good number. I have never worked on this small of a motor, but it starts right up and compression is 70 psi (max with the pull rope). It isnt pumping water though, so I just wanted to check compression before I started tearing into a lost cause. thanks!!

Compression is fine for a rope start outboard.

well thats good to know, motors I have worked on in the past had like 120psi, but I didn't figure this small of a motor would have that much compression. I guess the important thing is that the numbers from both cylinders are the same.
