I have two 1957 35 hp evinruides one is a lark the other is a big twin I think
they have both been spray painted so there is very little external info.
what's the difference in these motors

Mechanically, there is no difference. The Lark will typically come with an electric choke and starter, whereas the Big Twin may or may not. The Lark has a small door in the front, to access the pull rope and carb adjustments. The Big Twin will not. There may be differences in the paint color, as well.

Yea, I'm a big fan of the Lark/Big Twin. Awesome motors. Are you restoring these? I'm restoring an 1953 Johnson 25hp myself. I've had several of the other in my collections in the past.
