We need a 'philosophy of boating' forum.

As has been mentioned the economy still ain't all that wonderful, contrary to 'official' reports stating otherwise. Alotta people are hurting.

In FL during the past few years 100,000 boats disappeared from the tax rolls. Meaning money from licensing/registration. The state scratched their heads & wondered how something like this could happen. "We should be adding boats not losing them!" Being incompetent beaurocrats they hired a consulting firm, at the taxpayers expense, to tell them what was wrong.

Dunno what it cost the state but I probly coulda told em the same thing the 'conultants' did for a lot less. They reached the brilliant conclusion that the economy still sucks, fuel prices are too high, insurance & registration is becoming prohibitive, maintenence costs & storage keep rising, etc.

In addition, and to their credit. They noted that the ever increasing number of no wake zones, most to 'protect' our beloved sea cows & the rest to protect the rich, was turning boaters off. But I digress....

LOL! No one believes the economy is great or even good. Does anyone expect the administration that put the economy in the toilet to be honest with their numbers now?

Its not the economy. Boaters will be boaters no matter what. The crap rotting in the driveway would have been there anyway.

Its a fad! Thought it might be fun, or just a Joneses thing. Turned out to not be what we expected.

First of all, had to do it with insufficient funds, so bought used. Got a real good deal....hahaha. But, turned out it wasn't a deal after all and now it'll cost double what was paid to get it running. The wife won't go any more because it breaks down every time.

Or, the kids are now a bit older and don't want to go. Whiny baby teens that have nothing better to do than stick their face in an Iphone.

Or, the ole lady just doesn't want to go. Never liked it in the first place. Nobody else to go with.

Or, He did buy new but had no idea what to do next. Its meant to get wet, right? So, no need for a cover. When we get the oil changed in the car, the mechanic recommends needed service, but nobody to help you with the boat since you didn't read the manual and you never took it in for service. Now it doesn't run, in addition to looking like crap. All that ripped upholstery makes you ashamed, so you don't want to take friends out any more.

Or, Your fishing buddy dies, so nobody to go with any more. (true story from a retired coworker)

Or, the guy died and the widow just kept it.

etc, etc.

I see lot's of boats on trailers also. I have found that most are broken and the owner does not have the money to fix them.

Went to buy my boat that had sat for a few months. The owner had 2 boats in the driveway. When asked why he was selling that one-- he said "It was the wifes boat, got rid of the wife and now her boat".

Its kinda sad to see all the boats rotting and on trailers... but that's less idiots at the ramp and on the lake. They can stay at home on the couch and I'm fine with that.

Even though I don't use the ramps or lakes I must agree as there are fewer on the ICW and in the inlets to the Atlantic. However, Tow Boat US and mechanics are missing a lot of work from those that don't maintain their craft.
