Area all hoses to be double clamped?

Doing a self-survey through boat us and one of the questions is if the fuel lines are double clamped. Also asks the same question about the thru-hull fittings, Are the hoses double clamped.

I do not have my boat home yet but I don't believe that any of the hoses are double clamped - can I just add another clamp? Assumeing that the barbs are long enough.

The fuel lines on my boat are single clamped, but the barbed fitting are long enough to do a double clamp. (which I may do as I am replacing the fuel tank).

I have double clamped some of the cooling hoses that are normally under pressure. Single clamp on the ones that are normally under suction.

Re: Area all hoses to be double clamped?

I worked for several boat builders and we double clamped all water hoses below the water line. Like thru hulls. And we double clamped all fuel hoses fill, draw and vent at the tank but not at the business end. There are some coast guard rules, and NMMA rules about this for the manufacturer but not the owner. It's been awhile and I am not familiar with what those may have morphed into by now. I'm sure you can find them on line

Sure -- why not?

I can't see adding another clamp hurting anything if there is room for it.

Re: Area all hoses to be double clamped?

USCG and ABYC require double clamping on fuel fill and fuel lines only. However, I know almost every hose on my boat is double-clamped from the manufacturer. After reading many articles about failures on single clamped lines, I would certainly make sure everything was double clamped if there was room for it.

Side story - I was moving my boat from Daytona to Jacksonville and noticed the aft bilge pump coming on every 15 minutes or so, but only running for 30 seconds then shutting off. During an idle area, I had the Mrs. man the helm while I went into the engine room to check it out. On a double clamped raw water intake hose, one clamp had broken at the screw fitting and the other had been tightened so much it was cutting into the hose! What would have happened to my boat if it was single clamped and failed? How much water would have come in on that 1 1/2" under-the-waterline fitting?

My builder uses stainless hose clamps and double clamps everything.

The possibility of a failure from the combination of corrosion and vibration is too great to rely on single steel clamp to protect you and your investment. Double clamp all connectons and inspect them on a regular basis.

If I'm not mistaken, there are special clamps for fuel hoses. Sure - the cost is three to fives times as much but it's certainly not an area to scrimp a buck or two. Stainless steel as dingbat says but I think the edges are also rolled to prevent cutting. I install mine facing opposite to each other to help equalize the tightening pressure.

Fireman, there's another forum I frequent that's more 'local' than this one. Anyway, a guy there was redoing his Carver and posted a picture... there were cockpit cupholders that had a drain tube attached to the bottom- and THOSE were double-clamped, too! Gotta hand it to Carver. They don't cut corners.

I live on a beef farm all the hoses on my machinery are double clamped so nthe hoses on my boat have been double clamped
