Just now My female black lab hauled butt out the doggy door with my male lab right behind her. That’s when the screeching and yelping started. It sounds bad. By the time I got outside a huge raccoon chased the female out of the yard where the battle began right up the steps on to our deck She turned and faced him some swiping and tooth action insued and chased Mr raccoon back down the steps only to attack the male that was coming up the steps. The raccoon got a lick or two on him before he tossed the thing and gave chase. He is a solid 100 pounds, the female 85 pounds. The raccoon was a mature one and was as big as I’ve seen. I finally managed to get both dogs in the house and by the time I went out with the 12 Gauge auto loader the coon was nowhere in sight. Both dogs are current with rabies shot but they need to go to the vet. ☹️
Hoping I can locate this raccoon because it’s highly likely it has rabies.

Those dam raccoons are as tough as they come and can be really nasty. I lived in a house on stilts than was 13’ above ground and got into with one one night I kicked that dam thing 5 or 6 times with the last one kicking it over and off then deck. It hit the ground and just ran off like nothing ever happened.
Hope the dogs are okay.

Unless that raccoon has a real good reason to come back (young ones?) .It probably will think twice before getting anywhere near the place where she does not feel welcome.

Is there rabies in the area? You want to be careful with that.

Both dogs dealing with some scratches nothing major, no deep punctures. They both got a rabies booster. Walked out the vet door 200$ lighter.
As far as the coon I went down in the woods where I last saw it and searched around only to come up empty. Thousands of trees the thing could have climbed, and a ton of nooks and crannies he could have crawled in. Still a lot of heavy foliage here. We will be keeping a look out. I called the closest neighbor to the area the thing headed and gave him a heads up as well.

I trapped a lot of Racoons and relocated them when I first moved here years ago. Haven’t seen very many since then .

Vet told me that one of the pet owners that goes there was bitten by a rabid raccoon several weeks ago. Not sure where exactly that happened could have been a different township.

:) I gotta ask , what do you mean by "relocated " ?
I have "relocated" a few critters over the years , mostly to the offal pit or a fire ....sometimes a convenient bush or a bit of swift flowing water is all thats required ( sorta depends on the size of the dispatched...I mean your not going to chuck a horse in the creek ) . The hard part is coming up with a suitable explanation for the aggrieved party as there is usually some conspiracy involved and not everyone is told the truth 😆

"Trapped and relocated" generally is considered to mean that the animals were caught in a live trap and moved to a different set of woods for a different set of people to deal with the shenanigans of the animal. I have relocated groundhogs, skunks, racoons, opossums, porcupines, and feral cats this way multiple times.

I have also dispatched them with a well placed blast from a .22, a pellet gun, various handguns, or various shotguns. Those were "dispatched" swiftly and humanely.

Relocate and dispatched are 2 different things ...

I think Aspeck summed it up very well. Sometimes it’s necessary to kill a wild animal just for the sake of getting rid of it when a serious issue arises like what happened today at my place. Other times when they do things like get into your trash or crap in your driveway a lot. Thats when you know you have too many around and you trap them and move them to a more remote area, or sometimes release them behind your fishin buddies house. 😜
I’m not a fan of killing an animal and not using it for food or the Hide

I trap in a live trap then dispatch with .22 short unless it is a skunk. Being within city limits and between 2 law enforcement officers does limit my options. Raccoons killed all my chickens one year so I bought a dog proof leg hold trap. It worked pretty good for 2 of the 3 raccoons and one stray cat.

I guess what I meant was , why would you relocate something that is going to be a pita wherever its , but I do get the respect for the animal and not wasting the resource. I do wonder sometimes tho ( human nature ? ) at just how quickly that respect disappears when the critter becomes a serious/ financial nuisance .
I would never relocate a feral cat for instance

I have trapped and relocated many critters over the years. I hear with raccoons you need to take them at least 10 miles away or they will find their way back. Not sure if that’s true though.

Ya sure that isn't a sea story? Maybe he missed

Here in KY they hunt Coons year round (except modern deer season), no limit with just a 22 and no one has ever said they needed something bigger

Dad had the .22 and the 30-30 by the back slider year round

The .22 was usually squirrel and rabbit. The 30-30 was for deer. I have no reason to question his story

Aint quite the same but I was there when a bull soaked up 1/2 a dozen .22 head shot rounds at zero range , from various angles and it just stood there
